Why does dry skin itch?
Dry skin develops when skin loses too much water and oil. Cold weather, indoor heating, air conditioning, frequent washing and harsh soaps can contribute. Hot water and repeated washing can worsen dryness, which makes the bathroom an oddly well equipped place to lose moisture. Skin also produces less natural oil with age.1
Notice when the itching starts. Itching after bathing can be linked to hot water, too much washing or harsh soap. Nighttime itching can come from dry bedroom air or a condition such as eczema; the time of day alone does not identify the cause.3
Is it dry skin or eczema?
Ordinary dry skin usually causes mild itching and feels rough or tight. Eczema tends to cause stronger, persistent itching, inflamed or discolored patches, swelling, thickened skin or oozing. Dryness can trigger eczema flares in people prone to eczema, but having dry skin does not mean you will develop it.2
Atopic dermatitis, a common type of eczema, causes itchy, dry, inflamed skin and can begin at any age. Asteatotic eczema is another type that causes dry, itchy, cracked patches. It is especially common after age 60 and in winter. Both benefit from moisturizing, but persistent symptoms need an assessment rather than a diagnosis based on dryness alone.45
How can you relieve the itch?
- 1Take a short shower or bath in warm, not hot, water. Limit bathing to five to ten minutes and avoid scrubbing.
- 2Use a gentle cleanser where needed, rather than covering your skin in a thick lather.
- 3Pat dry gently, then apply moisturizer while your skin is still damp. Choose a fragrance free cream or ointment; these add more moisture than lotions.
- 4Reapply moisturizer two to three times daily, or as needed, including after washing your hands.
- 5For an itchy patch, apply a cool compress. Avoid scratching, which can break the skin and increase irritation.
Moisturizing is the main home care step for dry skin, so the useful part of the routine is not the part with the most elaborate name. Wear soft clothing and use laundry detergent without fragrance or dyes. A humidifier can help in dry rooms; clean it regularly to prevent mold.16
Ask a dermatologist before adding an itch relief cream to very dry skin, because some can worsen irritation. Tell them if moisturizer burns or stings. If you already use a prescription skin treatment, ask which product goes on first rather than guessing the order.56
How long should relief take?
Dryness related itching should improve within a few weeks of consistent skin care. Asteatotic eczema can take a couple of weeks to rehydrate and heal. If symptoms are not improving with regular moisturizer, arrange an appointment instead of repeatedly adding new products.235
When should you see a doctor?
Seek medical advice if itching keeps returning, interrupts sleep, occurs without a visible rash or leaves open sores from scratching. Contact a clinician promptly for pain, swelling, leaking fluid or pus, fever or chills, which can indicate infection.125
Dryness is not the only cause of itching. Pregnancy, medication reactions and underlying conditions can also cause it. Mention pregnancy and any new medicines during an assessment, and do not stop a prescribed medicine unless your clinician tells you it is safe.7
