What does keratosis pilaris look like?
KP usually forms patches of small, painless bumps with dry, rough skin. The bumps can match your skin colour, look red on white skin, or look darker on brown or black skin. Some patches itch. Location alone is not enough to identify forearm bumps as KP.24
The nickname "chicken skin" describes the bumpy texture, not a particularly dignified naming system.3
Why do the bumps form?
Keratin, a substance found in skin, hair and nails, builds up and blocks hair follicles. The exact reason for that buildup is not known. KP runs in families, and genetic changes linked with dry skin play a role. KP is not infectious, so you cannot catch it or spread it to someone else.12
How to care for bumpy forearms
- 1Wash with a mild, unperfumed bathing product. Keep showers brief and use cool or lukewarm water.
- 2If you use a washcloth or exfoliating mitt, keep the pressure gentle. Do not use harsh scrubs, scratch or pick the bumps.
- 3Apply a moisturizer to help with dryness and roughness. General dry skin care includes using a cream or ointment when skin feels dry and gently massaging it in.
- 4Choose softer, looser sleeves if clothing rubs the affected area. Tight clothing can increase friction and trap sweat and heat.
Which moisturizer ingredients help?
| Ingredient | What it offers | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Ceramides | Help skin retain moisture and reduce roughness. | An option when KP and eczema occur together. |
| Urea | Helps dissolve the keratin blocking follicles. | Available in drugstore moisturizers; higher concentrations can be prescribed. |
| Ammonium lactate | Helps dissolve buildup associated with bumps and redness. | Can feel sticky. |
| Salicylic acid | May loosen or dissolve keratin plugs. | Can irritate sensitive skin. |
Start with moisturizing rather than aggressive scrubbing. Finding a useful product and application frequency can take trial and error; the goal is less roughness without irritation. A pharmacist can help you choose a cream or lotion.23
How long does improvement take?
Expect weeks or months of consistent care before a noticeable difference. Symptoms can return when treatment stops. KP often lasts for years, although it can improve through adulthood or eventually clear by itself.23
Treatment aims to soften the bumps and improve their appearance, not deliver the sort of clean slate a skincare advert would like to sell.2
KP can look worse in winter and improve in summer. Dry air can aggravate roughness; a humidifier can help when indoor humidity is low.23
When should you get help?
Speak to a pharmacist if your skin becomes itchy or inflamed, or home care is not helping and the bumps bother you. They can advise whether you need a GP. A dermatologist can help with a treatment plan when the diagnosis or next step is unclear.23
Laser treatment is sometimes considered for persistent redness and roughness, but results are not permanent. Steroid creams and laser treatments are not usually available on the NHS for KP because their effectiveness is not established, and private treatment can be expensive.23
