The comparison below covers the US CeraVe Hydrating Face Lotion, Invisible Mineral Face Sunscreen and Mineral Sunscreen Stick, not every mineral sunscreen on the market. Match the full product name before buying, because 'CeraVe mineral SPF 50' is more of a family introduction than a specific address.345

Choose Hydrating Face Lotion for a lotion under makeup

Hydrating Sunscreen Face Lotion is the clearest fit if you want a facial lotion with an oil free, fragrance free formula. CeraVe describes it as suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, and designed to layer invisibly under makeup. Its ceramides support the skin's protective barrier, niacinamide helps soothe skin, and hyaluronic acid helps retain moisture. Those are useful formula features, not reasons to expect sunscreen to treat a skin condition. CeraVe describes hydration throughout the day, but protection still needs reapplication; the word hydrating has not negotiated an exemption from the directions.3

Invisible Mineral is a different lotion, not a renamed Hydrating formula

Invisible Mineral Face Sunscreen SPF 50 contains 15.35% zinc oxide and 2.66% titanium dioxide, rather than the Hydrating lotion's 7% and 9%. Both carry broad spectrum SPF 50. Choose between them by the complete formula and your finish preferences, not simply by which tube has more zinc oxide. Invisible Mineral contains niacinamide, three ceramides and panthenol, and its directions require shaking before use. Do not treat Invisible in the name as a promise about white cast or makeup wear on your face.56

Choose the stick for portability and water resistance

CeraVe Mineral Sunscreen Stick SPF 50 is designed for application before sun exposure and touch ups on the go. CeraVe describes a lightweight, fragrance free, oil free formula with a clear finish and suitability for sensitive skin. Unlike the two lotions above, the stick has a stated water resistance duration of 40 minutes. Its formula includes paraffin, candelilla wax and beeswax, so it is a different format and formula from the face lotions, not liquid sunscreen in more convenient packaging.4

Will mineral sunscreen leave a white cast?

Mineral sunscreen can leave a visible film or white cast, although newer formulas are sometimes designed to look more transparent. Some tinted mineral sunscreens are designed to avoid a white film, rather than give sunscreen a visible speaking role. Iron oxide can provide that tint. If white cast is your main concern, consider a tinted formula rather than choosing solely by SPF or the mineral filter percentages. The relevant question is how the complete sunscreen looks when applied, not whether zinc oxide appears near the top of the label.17

What protection should you expect?

Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA contributes to wrinkles and sunspots, while UVB causes sunburn. Sunscreen helps prevent sunburn and, when used as directed alongside other sun protection measures, reduces the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. Treat sunscreen as protection during exposure, not a treatment with a promised date for clearing existing marks or wrinkles. Water resistant does not mean waterproof: protection breaks down in water, and reapplication remains necessary.16

How to apply these mineral sunscreens

  1. 1Shake Invisible Mineral Face Sunscreen well before use. The Hydrating lotion and stick directions do not include that step.
  2. 2Apply your chosen sunscreen liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure. Use sunscreen daily, rather than reserving it for beach days.
  3. 3Reapply at least every two hours. For Hydrating Face Lotion, CeraVe also directs reapplication immediately after towel drying.
  4. 4For swimming or sweating, use a water resistant sunscreen. Reapply the CeraVe stick after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating and immediately after towel drying.
  5. 5Combine sunscreen with shade, protective clothing, a hat and sunglasses. Limit time in the sun, especially from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  6. 6Keep the two lotions away from excessive heat and direct sunlight when storing them.

Who should be careful?

The Hydrating and Invisible Mineral lotions are for external use only and should not be applied to damaged or broken skin. Stop using either lotion and ask a doctor if a rash occurs. Invisible Mineral must be kept out of the eyes; rinse with water if it gets in. Sensitive skin suitability and noncomedogenic wording are product selection features, not promises that a sunscreen cannot irritate skin or cause breakouts. For children under six months, ask a doctor before using these products; shade and protective clothing are the preferred ways to limit direct sun exposure.1456
