What does the serum do?
Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3, also called nicotinamide. Applied to skin, it supports the skin barrier, the outer layer that helps retain moisture and keep irritants out. Clinical research supports improvements in uneven pigmentation and signs of skin aging, although the exact mechanisms behind those effects are still being worked out.234
Naturium's serum is intended to improve uneven texture, excess oil and congestion as well as visible pores. Zinc PCA is the zinc salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid; Naturium includes it to help reduce sebum, the skin's oil, and bacterial growth. These are reasons to consider the serum for oily or blemish prone skin, rather than treating it as just a dark spot product.15
Niacinamide can make pores look less noticeable, but nothing has been proven to reduce their actual size.2
What is in the formula?
Alongside niacinamide and zinc PCA, the ingredient list includes glycerin, propanediol, sodium hyaluronate, dimethicone and tocopheryl acetate. Naturium lists the serum as fragrance free, vegan, cruelty free and dermatologist tested, with a pH of 5.00 to 5.60. Match the ingredient list on your bottle when checking ingredients you avoid, because packaging and online lists can differ after updates.6
How do you apply it?
- 1Before your first use, patch test a small amount on your forearm and wait 24 hours to check for a reaction.
- 2Cleanse your skin gently.
- 3Shake the bottle well.
- 4Apply an even layer to your face, neck and chest. Naturium specifies 1 to 2 pea sized drops.
- 5Follow with moisturizer.
Naturium's directions allow daily use, morning and night. For sensitive skin, start slowly rather than immediately using a concentrated serum twice a day. General guidance for topical niacinamide allows reducing use to once daily or every other day if twice daily application causes excessive dryness.123
Niacinamide does not work as sunscreen and does not prevent sunburn. Using this serum in the morning does not replace sun protection.3
Do you need 12% niacinamide?
Not necessarily. Benefits occur at lower concentrations: 2% niacinamide moisturizers have reduced facial oiliness, and 5% formulas have improved pigmentation, texture and fine lines. A concentration is an ingredient amount, not a league table for skincare.3
| Naturium option | Format and concentration | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Niacinamide Essence 3% | An essence used before serums and moisturizers | You want niacinamide at a lower concentration in an early routine step. |
| Niacinamide Gel Cream 5% | An oil free gel cream | You want a niacinamide moisturizer for oily or combination skin. |
| Niacinamide Serum 12% Plus Zinc 2% | A concentrated serum with zinc PCA | You want a separate treatment focused on visible pores, uneven texture and excess oil. |
For very dry skin, Naturium positions the 5% gel cream as a treatment before another moisturizer or facial oil, rather than necessarily the only moisturizing step. If you are sensitive, choose a low concentration first. You do not have to layer the essence, gel cream and serum to get niacinamide's benefits.25
How long does it take to work?
Naturium reports improvements in the appearance of dark spots, pores, fine lines and wrinkles in an eight week clinical study of this serum. The study included people across skin types and people who considered their skin sensitive. Think in weeks rather than expecting a visible transformation after the first application.1
For niacinamide generally, studies of 2% moisturizers found reduced facial oil production after four to six weeks. A study of 5% topical niacinamide found improvements in fine lines, pigmentation, texture and redness over 12 weeks. Those timelines concern different formulas and strengths, not a promise that this 12% serum will work faster.3
Can you use it with vitamin C or retinol?
Yes. Niacinamide can be used alongside vitamin C, retinol, hyaluronic acid, peptides and alpha hydroxy acids. You do not need separate morning and evening routines solely to keep those ingredients away from niacinamide. Compatibility does not remove the need to watch for irritation from the routine as a whole.27
Check whether your moisturizer or other serums already contain niacinamide before adding more. Niacinamide can occupy one useful place in a routine without turning every step into a vitamin B3 attendance register.2
Who should be careful?
Naturium considers this serum appropriate for sensitive skin and advises patch testing. That sits alongside the general advice to start sensitive skin on a low concentration: being suitable for a skin type does not make 12% the best first choice. Niacinamide is generally gentle, but rare reactions include itching, mild burning, redness and allergy. If a patch test causes a reaction, do not proceed to full face application.26
What size and price should you expect?
The US Naturium listing prices the standard 30 ml bottle at $17 and offers a 60 ml jumbo bottle with an advertised 10% saving. These are the US listing's sizes and price, not an Australian price quote. Choose the standard size if you want the smaller bottle rather than committing to twice the volume.6
