Two lightweight moisturizers that do not fit

These exclusions apply to those exact products, not every moisturizer sold by either brand. Use the full product name when checking a candidate, because "daily moisturizer" is a description, not a unique identity.23

How to check a possible replacement

  1. 1Check the full ingredient list on the package you are buying. CeraVe updates ingredient lists regularly and directs buyers to the package for the current formula.
  2. 2Look for both "hyaluronic acid" and "sodium hyaluronate". CeraVe's US page highlights hyaluronic acid but uses sodium hyaluronate in the ingredient list.
  3. 3Reject a candidate that lists either name if avoiding hyaluronic acid is your requirement. A lightweight lotion can match your texture preference while failing your ingredient requirement.

CeraVe also has a Daily Moisturizing Lotion listing that spells out "Hyaluronic Acid" in its ingredients. Check the bottle rather than relying on remembered wording from another listing, because moisturizer names do not come with a version history.1

Does choosing ceramides solve the problem?

Not by itself. Ceramides and hyaluronic acid do different jobs: hyaluronic acid helps skin hold onto water, while ceramides are fats that help form a barrier over the outermost skin layer and reduce moisture loss. A moisturizer can contain both, as these two lotions do. A ceramide claim therefore does not tell you whether hyaluronic acid is absent.4

Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer is formulated for sensitive skin, contains five ceramides and is suitable for wearing under makeup. Those features can help distinguish its intended use, but they do not make it the right choice when your deciding requirement is avoiding hyaluronic acid.2
