What is in Olay Retinol24 serum?

The standard US Retinol24 Night Smoothing Serum contains retinol, retinyl propionate, niacinamide, glycerin, dimethicone and the peptide palmitoyl pentapeptide 4. Olay describes that formula as fragrance and dye free, quick absorbing and hydrating for 24 hours. These details belong to the US formula; use your bottle's ingredient list to check a 30 ml version sold elsewhere.1

Retinol is a form of vitamin A and belongs to the retinoid family. It increases skin cell turnover, helps prevent clogged pores and increases collagen production, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines. Niacinamide helps skin retain moisture, while Olay includes its peptide for smoother and firmer looking skin. Those are different jobs within the formula, rather than several names for retinol.135

An exact retinol percentage is not stated for the standard US serum. Over the counter retinol products are not required to disclose their percentage, so an undisclosed strength is not a useful basis for comparing potency with another serum. Choose a disclosed low strength if knowing the concentration matters to your starting routine.2

How do you use it?

For planning your routine, allow at least six weeks, and sometimes up to three months, for antiaging products to show results. Moisturizing can soften the appearance of fine lines within days, whereas visible wrinkle changes from retinol usually take several months. A smoother morning is not the same milestone as a changed wrinkle, however convenient the advertising calendar would find that.36

Continue using a tolerated product if you want to maintain its benefits. If consistent use, moisturizer and sun protection do not deliver the improvement you want, a dermatologist can discuss other options. Creams and serums cannot address every sign of skin aging.6
