The 4% wash has a creamy texture, so the name is doing unusually honest work. Its moisturising ingredients do not remove benzoyl peroxide's potential to cause dryness or irritation.13
Which strength makes sense for your skin?
For mild facial pimples, benzoyl peroxide is a useful treatment, but the usual starting recommendation is actually 2.5%. Of these two choices, 4% is closer to that low strength starting point. If dryness or irritation is a concern, do not jump straight to 10%. For back acne, a 10% foaming wash is an option when you feel you need stronger treatment, rather than the default for every breakout. Choose by the treatment you need, not by which bottle looks more committed to the job.24
How do you use the wash?
- 1Wet the area you want to cleanse.
- 2For PanOxyl 4% Creamy Wash, apply and massage gently for 1 to 2 minutes. Do not scrub.
- 3Rinse thoroughly and pat dry.
- 4Start once daily. PanOxyl allows a gradual increase to twice daily if needed or directed by your dermatologist.
General back acne guidance recommends leaving benzoyl peroxide on the back for 2 to 5 minutes because back skin is thicker than facial skin. That is not a reason to replace your bottle's instructions: PanOxyl specifies 1 to 2 minutes for its 4% Creamy Wash. Keep benzoyl peroxide away from eyes, mouth, broken or infected skin, hair and fabrics. It can bleach hair and fabric. Use sunscreen because benzoyl peroxide increases sensitivity to sunlight.123
How long should you give it?
Expect weeks, not an overnight change. General acne treatment timelines put fewer breakouts at 4 to 8 weeks and clearing at around 16 weeks when treatment works. For back acne, look for improvement within 6 to 8 weeks. Keep the routine consistent rather than adding another acne product during the initial trial. If back acne has not changed after 6 to 8 weeks, see a dermatologist rather than simply increasing the strength.24
When should you reduce use or get help?
Dryness, peeling, redness, itching or painful skin can occur. Using the wash less often can help; ask a pharmacist or doctor about symptoms that bother you or persist. Stop using it and seek emergency help for throat or tongue swelling or difficulty breathing. Check with a doctor or pharmacist before combining it with other acne treatments, including prescriptions. Benzoyl peroxide can usually be used during pregnancy, but check before starting, including if you are trying to conceive. Deep, painful pimples or acne that scars need a dermatologist, not just a stronger cleanser.14
