How to apply a patch and moisturizer

  1. 1Wash your face, including the area you want to cover. Do not pop or pick the pimple to prepare it for a patch.
  2. 2Dry the patch area thoroughly. The adhesive will not stick as well to wet skin.
  3. 3Apply the patch directly over the blemish, following its package instructions.
  4. 4Apply your remaining skincare gently around the patch, including moisturizer. Avoid rubbing lotion across the sticker.
  5. 5Leave the patch on for the manufacturer's stated wear time, then remove it. Most plain pimple patches need several hours, and many are intended for overnight use.

Putting a patch on first gives it direct contact with the pimple rather than a layer of moisturizer. A fluid absorbing patch needs access to the blemish, not a tasting menu of your skincare.1

What if you already applied moisturizer?

You do not need to wash your whole face again. For Mighty Patch, Hero Cosmetics advises using a tissue dampened with water to remove product residue around the blemish. Dry that spot before applying the patch. Only the patch area needs a clean start, not the entire evening's paperwork.1

Hero Cosmetics also offers an alternative for Mighty Patch: wait at least 30 minutes after skincare before applying it. The type and amount of product can still affect adhesion, so removing residue is the more direct way to get the patch onto clean skin. That waiting option is specific to Mighty Patch, not a universal rule for every acne sticker.1

Do you need to skip moisturizer?

No. Moisturizer helps dry skin and can help skin tolerate drying acne treatments such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and prescription retinoids. Use it daily when your skin feels dry. Look for a moisturizer labelled "noncomedogenic" or "won't clog pores," meaning it is unlikely to cause acne. Acne care does not require moisturizer to resign.4

Moisturizer applied after washing helps trap water in the skin. You can leave the surrounding skin slightly damp for moisturizer while drying just the spot where the patch will sit. The patch needs a dry surface; the rest of your face does not need to wait through the patch's wear time to be moisturized.34

Does the order change for daytime or medicated patches?

For daytime Mighty Patch use, apply the patch to clean skin before concealer or foundation. For Hero Cosmetics' Mighty Patch for Early Stage Blemishes, cleanse and dry the area, apply the patch and press lightly for 20 seconds. Wear it for 6 to 8 hours and repeat in 2 to 3 days if needed. This micropoint version contains salicylic acid and cica, so do not treat its directions as interchangeable with a plain hydrocolloid sticker.12

What can a patch actually do?

Plain hydrocolloid patches work best on open, oozing pimples by absorbing fluid and covering the spot against further picking. After the recommended wear time, the blemish may look smaller and less inflamed. They work less well on closed pimples and offer little help for blackheads or deeper whiteheads. Patches do not prevent future acne.3

Be careful with patches if you have sensitive skin or react to adhesives. Added salicylic acid or tea tree oil can irritate an already irritated spot. A hydrocolloid patch can protect skin and support healing, but a persistent deep, painful pimple or several deep, painful pimples calls for a dermatologist rather than more stickers.35
