Salicylic acid comes in several forms, and the product's directions determine how to prepare your skin, apply it and use it regularly. A bottle's directions decide whether you rinse, not the word "acid", which has been given rather too much administrative power.4
Which bottle do you have?
| Product | Directions to follow |
|---|---|
| Salicylic Acid 2% Solution | Check the Solution's own label for rinse instructions, amount and frequency. |
| Salicylic Acid 2% Masque | Use once or twice a week, ideally in the evening, on clean, dry skin. Leave on for no more than 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. |
| AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution | Use once or twice a week, ideally in the evening, on clean, dry skin. Leave on for no more than 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. |
The Masque and Peeling Solution have timed rinse instructions, so the last word in the product name is doing actual work. Neither should be applied to wet, sensitive, peeling or compromised skin. The Peeling Solution is only suitable for experienced users of acid exfoliation.23
What if salicylic acid stings or irritates?
General salicylic acid precautions apply: avoid broken, red, swollen, irritated or infected skin. Speak to a doctor if stinging or irritation is severe or does not go away. Stop using salicylic acid and get immediate medical help for throat tightness, difficulty breathing, feeling faint or swelling of the eyes, face, lips or tongue. If salicylic acid gets into your eyes, nose or mouth, flush with water for 15 minutes.14
How should you fit salicylic acid into your routine?
For a new topical salicylic acid product, test a small amount on one or two small treatment areas for three days before wider use. Start less often if dryness or irritation develops. Do not add benzoyl peroxide, tretinoin, abrasive cleansers or alcohol containing skincare to the same treated skin unless your doctor directs you to. Discuss use with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.14
How long does salicylic acid take to help acne?
Salicylic acid opens clogged pores and exfoliates skin, and it is effective for whiteheads and pimples. Acne treatment generally takes at least six to eight weeks before fewer breakouts appear. That is a general treatment timeline, not a specific result promised for this bottle. If breakouts continue despite trying acne treatments, a dermatologist can identify the type of acne and choose treatment to match.5
