Choose the purpose before the time

Facial masks can help address some skin concerns when they contain the right ingredients. Masks used in professional facials can be selected for goals such as moisture retention or signs of aging. Masks target different goals, which makes "face mask" a category rather than a particularly helpful set of instructions. A mask aimed at one concern is not automatically the right choice for another.2

Where does a mask fit in your routine?

A standard professional facial includes cleansing, a mask selected for your skin concerns, and moisturizer. That offers a general starting order for an ordinary at home mask, rather than directions for every formula. Standard facials include a mask alongside other steps, so the mask has not been promoted to the whole routine.2

  1. 1Cleanse to remove makeup, dirt and other impurities.
  2. 2Apply the mask using its individual directions, including whether to remove it or leave it on.
  3. 3Follow with moisturizer where the mask's directions allow, using the cleansing, mask and moisturizer order as general guidance.

What should you expect from a mask?

Think of a mask as a targeted addition, not a replacement for treatment. If you are treating a skin disease or condition, continue that treatment rather than substituting a mask. The useful decision is whether the mask addresses your concern; choosing a morning or evening slot does not answer that question.1
