What is squalane?

Squalane is the stable form of squalene, an oily compound found naturally in people, animals and plants. Squalene is part of sebum, the oil your skin produces, and production declines with age. Converting squalene into squalane prevents it from becoming rancid in skincare products.1

What does squalane do for your skin?

Squalane's main practical benefit is reducing moisture loss. It can help when skin still feels dry after moisturizer or when you dislike a thick cream. Its anti inflammatory properties may also help reduce redness and swelling associated with acne or eczema.1

Moisturizers do several different jobs. Emollients soften and smooth the outer skin layer. Humectants attract and retain water. Occlusives form a surface barrier that reduces water loss, which is the role squalane plays when layered over lighter products. A moisturizer can combine these functions in one formula.12

General moisturizer benefits include less dryness, better skin barrier function and relief from itching. Moisture support is different from retinol's effects on collagen, the protein that helps give skin its structure.23

Who should try squalane?

Squalane is an option for dry skin and for people who prefer a lightweight oil. Squalane itself is noncomedogenic, meaning it does not clog pores. For oily or acne prone skin, the rest of the formula matters: other oils in the same product can contribute to blocked pores.1

Choose the format around the dryness you actually have. For substantial dryness, a cream or ointment is generally a better starting point than a lotion. Creams contain more oil than lotions, while ointments are thicker and preserve more water. For combination skin, moisturize the dry areas rather than automatically covering oily areas too. A separate oil is optional if your moisturizer already meets your needs, even if the bottle would look committed on the bathroom shelf.4

How do you use squalane?

  1. 1Wash with a gentle cleanser. For dry skin, avoid using so much cleanser that you create a thick lather.
  2. 2Apply moisturizer while skin is still damp after washing or bathing. This is general moisturizing guidance that helps trap water in the skin.
  3. 3If you use lighter serums or a toner, apply those before a separate squalane oil. Layer squalane over the lighter products.
  4. 4During the day, include broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, along with shade and protective clothing.

How often should you moisturize?

For general moisturizing, frequency depends on how dry your skin is. Slightly dry skin can need only a light moisturizer at night, while very dry skin can need a more protective product applied more frequently. Apply moisturizer again when skin feels dry rather than treating one application as a full day's coverage.25

The therapeutic effects of moisturizers are greatest during the first six hours after application. Regular application two to three times a day can be needed to maximize those benefits. This is general moisturizer guidance, not a specific schedule for pure squalane oil.2

What should sensitive skin watch for?

Fragrances, preservatives and dyes in a squalane product can trigger reactions in sensitive skin. Look for fragrance free skincare. An unscented label is not equivalent: the formula can contain chemicals that hide ingredient odors and irritate dry, sensitive skin.15

Stop using a moisturizer if an allergic rash develops. A dermatologist can investigate suspected contact allergy with patch testing. Tell your dermatologist if skincare causes burning, stinging or irritation. Get medical help for dryness that persists despite moisturizing, or becomes painful, cracked, bleeding or very irritating.245

What are the benefits of squalane with retinol?

Squalane provides moisture support, while retinol targets concerns such as fine lines and uneven texture. Pure squalane does not contain retinol, but the ingredients can be used together or combined in one product.13

For example, The Ordinary offers Retinol 0.2% in Squalane as a lower strength option. The brand directs users to apply its retinoids at night after cleansing and water based serums, then finish with an oil or moisturizer. It suggests starting a couple of times a week and increasing frequency as skin adjusts.3

The Ordinary advises against combining its retinoids in the same routine with direct acids, direct vitamin C, copper peptides or another retinoid. Squalane does not remove the need for retinol precautions: dryness, redness and peeling can occur. Use daytime sun protection. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss retinoid skincare with your doctor. If skin is already excessively dry, stop retinoid skincare and seek advice about persistent symptoms.35
