What does forehead heat rash look like?
Heat rash can appear anywhere on the body, including the forehead. Look for small raised spots with itching, prickling or mild swelling. Some spots contain fluid. The bumps can look red on white skin or grey or white on brown or black skin. Heat rash is not contagious. Heat rash, sweat rash and prickly heat mean the same thing, so three names do not require three products.23
Heat rash develops when sweat ducts, the tiny tubes carrying sweat to the skin surface, become blocked and sweat builds up underneath. Hot, humid weather and heavy sweating make it more likely. A rash appearing after exercise is not automatically heat rash: irritation, acne and hives can also be associated with heat or equipment worn against the skin.2456
How to calm the rash
- 1Move somewhere cooler, ideally an air conditioned or well ventilated room. Stop strenuous activity long enough to cool down.
- 2Gently wash your forehead with cool or lukewarm water. Pat dry rather than scrubbing, and leave the area uncovered when possible.
- 3Apply a cool damp cloth for up to 20 minutes to ease the prickly feeling. Wrap an ice pack in a towel rather than putting it directly on skin.
- 4Pat or tap an itchy area instead of scratching. Avoid perfumed washes and creams.
- 5Keep cool while the rash heals. Use light bedding and take cooling breaks if heat exposure is unavoidable.
Should you put a cream on it?
Start with cooling rather than adding layers of skincare. Cooling is the main treatment, which gives the skincare shopping list unusually little to do. Creams, ointments and powders that block sweat from escaping can make heat rash worse. If the skin is dry or itchy, a gentle moisturiser is an option, but ask a pharmacist to help choose a suitable product rather than coating the rash with a heavy ointment.124
Calamine lotion can soothe itching. A pharmacist can advise whether calamine, an antihistamine or hydrocortisone is appropriate. For a forehead rash, ask before applying a medicated cream. Children under 10 need a doctor's advice before using hydrocortisone. Severe rashes sometimes need prescribed corticosteroid creams, while suspected infection needs assessment rather than another soothing product.246
Could the bumps be something else?
- Raised itchy welts that appear with heat or exercise and disappear within 15 to 30 minutes can fit cholinergic urticaria, a type of hives, rather than heat rash.
- A rash where protective equipment rubs can be contact dermatitis, meaning inflammation caused by irritation or an allergy. Equipment can also trap heat by preventing sweat evaporation.
- Existing acne can worsen with pressure and friction from equipment. Gentle cleansing can help this type of acne, but it is not the same diagnosis as blocked sweat ducts.
What if it is on a baby's forehead?
Babies and young children develop heat rash more easily than adults, and babies can get it on their face. Move your baby to a cooler room, remove extra clothing layers and keep the skin clean and dry. Cooling usually lets the rash settle within a few days. Call your child's doctor if it persists or you are worried about the rash. Do not apply acne medicine to a baby's bumps unless a dermatologist recommends it.247
When should you get medical help?
See a doctor if the rash does not improve after a few days of cooling, keeps returning, spreads over a large area or causes pain or intense itching. Seek urgent care for possible infection, including pus, increasing redness around the rash, fever, chills or skin that becomes warm and swollen. Signs of heatstroke require emergency help; do not treat them as just a skin problem.14
