What does sweat rash look and feel like?
The bumps are superficial, meaning they sit near the skin's surface, and are not centred on individual hairs. Some look like little fluid filled blisters rather than solid bumps. Itching is a common symptom. Pus draining from a rash needs medical assessment rather than being dismissed as another version of prickly heat.12
Hot, humid weather and overheating make sweat rash more likely. Anyone can develop it, but babies and young children are affected most often. Sweat normally cools the body as it evaporates from the skin; sweating itself is a normal function, not something that needs eliminating.34
What should you do first?
Cooling is the main treatment, so this is not an invitation to give every bottle in the bathroom a job.1
- 1Move somewhere cooler and limit further time in the heat.
- 2Loosen tight clothing or change into loose cotton clothing to keep the skin cool and dry.
- 3Use a cool damp towel or take a cool or lukewarm shower to ease itching. Avoid spending a long time in the shower.
- 4Pat or tap itchy skin instead of scratching. Keep nails short, clean and smooth.
- 5Ask a pharmacist about itch relief if cooling is not enough. Calamine lotion may soothe sweat rash. Avoid emollients, meaning moisturising creams or ointments, on heat rash.
For itchy skin generally, avoid perfumed soaps, deodorants and moisturisers. Tell the pharmacist where the rash is and whether you have other symptoms. Cooling comes before product shopping, which is an unusually short agenda for a skincare problem.15
Could it be something other than sweat rash?
An itchy rash after getting hot is not automatically sweat rash. The trigger, appearance and timing help distinguish these possibilities, but overlapping symptoms need assessment if the cause is unclear.5
| Possible cause | Clues |
|---|---|
| Sweat rash | Tiny itchy bumps or small blisters associated with blocked sweat glands, often on the trunk. |
| Cholinergic urticaria, a type of hives | Small itchy raised welts with surrounding redness, triggered by heat, exercise or emotional stress. Individual welts usually last 15 to 30 minutes. |
| Polymorphic light eruption, a sunlight reaction | Itchy or burning spots, blisters or blotchy patches appearing within hours or days of sun exposure, often on the arms, legs or chest. |
| Contact dermatitis, a reaction to something touching the skin | An itchy or painful rash after exposure to products or irritating substances. Dryness and cracking can occur. |
How long should it last?
Mild heat rash usually settles with home care and cooling, but there is no fixed recovery time. Arrange a medical assessment if a rash has not gone away after a week of treatment, keeps returning or interferes with daily life.235
When should you get medical help?
Contact a clinician for severe pain, fever, constant itching, yellow or green drainage, warmth or red streaks around the rash. Blisters around the eyes, mouth or genitals also need assessment. During pregnancy, contact your GP or midwife about itching because it sometimes has a cause that needs checking.35
Seek immediate medical care for dizziness, nausea, vomiting or headache after heat exposure, especially with heavy sweating or rapid breathing. Confusion, behaviour changes or slurred speech can signal heat stroke, a medical emergency. Call 911 for a sudden rash that spreads quickly, trouble breathing or facial swelling.237
