Choose The Ordinary if those directions and its cream like texture fit your routine. Before choosing Paula's Choice, check the current ingredient list, application instructions and price for the same size. Compare prices in the same currency, because the checkout total does not grade skincare. There is no settled product winner here, and the unconfirmed details should not become reasons to spend more.1
What can azelaic acid help with?
Azelaic acid treats mild to moderate acne and helps reduce the persistent brown marks left after spots, called postinflammatory pigmentation. Acne guidelines include both azelaic acid and salicylic acid as treatment options. That makes either ingredient relevant to acne, but does not tell you which finished cosmetic product to buy.23
Prescription azelaic acid preparations include 15% gel and 20% cream. Keep their treatment results separate from expectations for a 10% cosmetic suspension. For acne, azelaic acid probably produces a poorer treatment response than benzoyl peroxide and little or no difference compared with tretinoin; evidence for other comparisons is less certain.24
How do you use The Ordinary?
- 1Patch test before applying the product to your face.
- 2Apply water based products first, then a small amount of the suspension, before heavier treatments.
- 3Use only on unbroken skin, avoiding the eye area and contact with eyes or mouth.
- 4The Ordinary directs morning and evening use, with sun protection during the day.
The Ordinary advises against combining this suspension with strong acids, retinoids or peptides. If you already use prescription acne treatment, discuss the combination with your prescriber rather than adding the suspension on top. These are product specific compatibility instructions, not a blanket rule that azelaic acid cannot be part of a medical treatment plan.12
How long should you wait for results?
General azelaic acid acne treatment can show improvement after about four weeks, with further improvement over several months. For rosacea breakouts, topical medication can show slight improvement after three or four weeks, while a noticeable difference usually takes two to three months. Those are treatment timelines, not a promised schedule for either cosmetic. Rosacea care also needs gentle cleansing, moisturizer and sunscreen.25
Who should be careful?
Very sensitive or eczema prone skin can find azelaic acid irritating. The Ordinary says to rinse off, stop using its suspension and consult a physician if irritation occurs. Discuss use with your clinician if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, breastfeeding or using prescription medicines. Seek medical advice for persistent burning, stinging or dryness, unexpected skin lightening, or worsening asthma. Stop use and seek urgent medical care for facial or throat swelling or difficulty breathing.126
See a GP if acne is not improving with self treatment, or if spots are deep, painful or causing scars. At that point, choosing between cosmetic tubes is not the main decision.7
