Is tinted moisturizer the same as tinted sunscreen?

The categories overlap: a tinted moisturizer can also be a labeled sunscreen, while a tinted sunscreen can provide color and moisturizing ingredients. Tinted moisturizer and tinted sunscreen can both combine color with sun protection, so the front of the bottle is not a particularly useful job title. Read the SPF, broad spectrum claim and application directions rather than deciding from the product name alone.34

Can it replace your sunscreen?

A tinted moisturizer labeled as sunscreen needs to be used as sunscreen: apply liberally and reapply as directed. A few dots blended out for cosmetic coverage are not a reliable way to get the labeled SPF. Sunscreen testing uses a thicker application than people commonly use for makeup, and too little product reduces protection. For a light tint application, use a generous base layer of sunscreen and put the tint over it after the sunscreen dries.15

What should you look for on the label?

  • Choose SPF 30 or higher. SPF mainly measures protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn.
  • Look for broad spectrum protection. This covers both UVA and UVB rays; an SPF number alone does not tell you both are covered.
  • Look for water resistance. A water resistant label specifies 40 or 80 minutes of protection during swimming or sweating.
  • Choose a tint that matches your skin tone. A matching tinted sunscreen helps reduce visible white residue.
  • Read the application directions. The product's cosmetic finish does not replace its sunscreen instructions.

No sunscreen is waterproof. If a tinted moisturizer tells you to use a water resistant sunscreen for swimming or sweating, choose that protection for those activities rather than relying on the tint alone. SPF also measures protection against an amount of sun exposure, not how many extra hours you can stay outside.36

How do you apply it?

  1. 1Wash your face and moisturize before applying a separate sunscreen.
  2. 2Apply sunscreen generously, covering exposed skin rather than only the areas where you want color. Remember your neck, ears and hairline.
  3. 3Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure. Follow the tinted moisturizer's directions if you are using it as your sunscreen layer.
  4. 4Let a separate sunscreen dry for a few minutes before applying the tinted moisturizer or other makeup.
  5. 5Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, and more often when swimming or sweating. Follow any water resistance time stated on the label.
16

Makeup does not remove the need to reapply sunscreen. A mineral tinted sunscreen is one option for topping up protection and color together. Mineral sunscreen powder can be useful for touch ups, but it should not replace your initial sunscreen layer. Reapplication also matters indoors when you sit near a window.1

Why choose a tint for darker skin or dark spots?

Darker skin still needs daily sunscreen. Sun exposure can worsen hyperpigmentation, meaning darkened patches of skin, and melasma, a condition that causes dark patches. Tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides help protect against visible light that can worsen dark spots, adding a reason to choose tint beyond cosmetic coverage. For darker skin tones, choose a tinted sunscreen with iron oxides as well as broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher and water resistance.47

Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide can leave a white cast; tinted versions are less likely to do so. A matching tint helps avoid white residue, which is a reasonable request for a product intended to blend in. Give the product time to settle and blend before judging its appearance. A mineral sunscreen can take about five to ten minutes to settle.4

Which formula suits your skin?

  • For dry skin, look for a sunscreen labeled moisturizing or for dry skin.
  • For oily or acne prone skin, look for noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores.
  • For sensitive skin, look for a sensitive skin label and avoid fragrance, parabens and oxybenzone.
  • If sunscreen stings or burns, choose one whose sunscreen ingredients are only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and avoid fragrance.

Tint + Tone is an example to consider if you want ceramides and sodium hyaluronate in a sheer SPF moisturizer. Cetaphil is an example if you want a formula the brand describes as lightweight and suitable for sensitive skin. Neither uses zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as its sunscreen ingredients, so choose a different formula if you need those mineral filters. Both require reapplication at least every two hours.35

What results should you expect?

Tint provides cosmetic coverage rather than a treatment schedule for fading existing spots. Regular sunscreen use helps prevent sunburn and premature skin aging, and can help prevent dark spots. Protection works alongside shade and clothing, not instead of them. Wear a hat and sunglasses, cover exposed skin where practical, and limit time in strong midday sun. If dark patches persist or you notice an unfamiliar growth, see a dermatologist.467

When should you stop using it?

For both tinted moisturizers above, do not apply to damaged or broken skin. Keep them out of your eyes and rinse with water if contact occurs. Stop using the product and ask a doctor if a rash develops. For children under six months, ask a doctor before use; prioritize shade and protective clothing.357

Keep sunscreen away from excessive heat and direct sunlight. Discard it after its expiration date, or three years after purchase if no expiration date appears. If you do not know how old it is, replace it.6
