Does Vaseline lotion contain SPF?

Some versions do, but SPF belongs to the exact formula, not the whole Vaseline range. The US SPF 30 cream and the historical Canadian SPF 15 lotion below are different products with different sunscreen ingredients. The Vaseline name identifies the brand, not a sun protection setting. Look for the SPF number and sunscreen directions on the bottle you actually have.134

The Canadian lotion's cancelled status makes it a historical product, not a current shopping recommendation. Its mineral ingredients and SPF must not be transferred to another Vaseline lotion with a similar name. An old product listing is not a reason to use an old bottle: discard sunscreen that is expired or whose age you cannot establish.34

What should you look for on the label?

  • Choose SPF 30 or higher. SPF describes protection from sunburn, primarily from ultraviolet B rays, known as UVB.
  • Look for broad spectrum coverage. This means protection against both UVB and ultraviolet A rays, known as UVA.
  • Look for water resistance when choosing sunscreen for swimming or sweating. The label states whether protection lasts for 40 or 80 minutes on wet skin.
24

SPF 30 filters out about 97% of UVB rays; SPF 15 filters out about 93%. No sunscreen filters out all UVB rays, so shade and protective clothing remain part of sun protection. A higher SPF does not remove the need to apply enough sunscreen or renew the protective layer.25

The word "sport" is not an official sunscreen category, however athletic the bottle looks. Choose by the stated water resistance instead. Water resistant sunscreen still needs reapplication every two hours on dry skin, after toweling off, and at its stated interval during swimming or sweating.2

How do you use Vaseline with SPF?

  1. 1Read your product's sunscreen directions. Vaseline tells you to apply the US chest and neck cream liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure.
  2. 2Cover all exposed skin with an appropriate sunscreen, not just the area named on one tube. General sunscreen guidance includes the face, neck, ears, hands, legs and tops of feet.
  3. 3Use enough for full coverage. As general guidance, most adults need at least about one ounce to cover exposed skin, with more needed depending on body size.
  4. 4Rub sunscreen thoroughly into the skin. Remember the hairline and exposed scalp; a wide brimmed hat is another option for scalp coverage.
  5. 5Reapply at least every two hours outdoors. After swimming or sweating, reapply promptly and follow the water resistance directions on your sunscreen.
  6. 6Protect your lips with an SPF 30 or higher lip balm rather than applying the chest and neck cream to your mouth.

Use sunscreen before outdoor exposure even in winter or on cloudy days. A short walk still exposes skin to ultraviolet rays. The one ounce amount is a general coverage guide, not a dose specifically for the chest and neck cream; the amount needed depends on how much skin is exposed.5

What protection can you expect?

Sunscreen helps prevent sunburn. Broad spectrum sunscreen used as directed alongside other protective measures also helps reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging caused by the sun. SPF measures protection against an amount of ultraviolet exposure, not a number of safe hours outdoors. Sun intensity changes with time of day and location.4

Limit sun exposure, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and cover exposed skin with clothing, a hat and sunglasses. Sunscreen is one part of protection, not a replacement for these measures. Apply before exposure rather than waiting until skin is already in the sun.45

Who should be careful?

For sensitive skin, dermatologists recommend mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both. The US Vaseline chest and neck cream uses chemical sunscreen ingredients and includes fragrance. If you need a mineral formula, choose another product whose active ingredient list matches that requirement.12

Do not apply the US chest and neck cream to damaged or broken skin. Keep it out of your eyes and rinse with water if contact occurs. Stop using it and ask a doctor if a rash develops. For children under six months, ask a doctor before use; shade and protective clothing are the first approach to sun protection.124

Can you use a bottle from last summer?

Check the expiration date before use. If there is no expiration date, consider sunscreen expired three years after purchase. Keep the container out of direct sunlight and excessive heat; outdoors, store it in shade or wrap it in a towel. These precautions help maintain the product's effectiveness.4
