Which is better for dark spots, vitamin C or niacinamide?

Neither is a universal winner. Both are legitimate options for dark spots, so the choice does not need a winner's podium. The useful distinction is what else you want the ingredient to do and whether the formula suits your skin.4

What mattersVitamin CNiacinamide

Other benefitsProvides antioxidant protection and supports collagen.Supports the skin barrier and reduces oxidative stress and inflammatory responses.
StrengthFor ascorbic acid serums, 10% to 20% is a practical selection range. There is no specific concentration recommendation here.
ToleranceCan cause dryness, itching or redness.Topical niacinamide is generally well tolerated.
TimingDaily use is possible; morning use complements sunscreen.Follow the finished product's directions rather than borrowing vitamin C directions.

Niacinamide is a reasonable first option when barrier support matters alongside fading pigment. Sensitive skin still needs a gentle finished formula. Vitamin C is a reasonable choice for someone who wants a morning antioxidant as well as help with uneven tone. Neither choice removes the need to address what caused the spots.25

What kind of dark spots are you treating?

Hyperpigmentation means excess pigment makes an area of skin darker. Brown marks left after a pimple or irritation are often postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, meaning pigment left after inflammation. Sun spots, also called solar lentigines, develop after ultraviolet exposure. Both can look like dark spots, but their triggers differ. Postinflammatory pigmentation can affect anyone and is often more intense and longer lasting in darker skin tones.16

Pigment depth matters too. Pigment in the epidermis, the outer skin layer, usually looks tan to dark brown and is more responsive to topical treatment. Pigment deeper in the dermis, the layer beneath it, can look blue or gray and persist much longer. A dermatologist can assess the type of pigmentation rather than leaving you to choose a serum by colour alone.14

Can I use vitamin C and niacinamide together?

They can appear together in a formulated dark spot treatment. One tested combination cream included niacinamide and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, a vitamin C derivative, alongside tranexamic acid, retinol, glycolic acid and other ingredients. It was used on dark spots once each evening for 12 weeks with a cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen routine. Pigment intensity improved from week two and spot size from week four. Those are expectations for that combination cream, not a timetable for two separate serums.6

How should I use them for dark spots?

  1. 1Start by addressing the trigger. Ongoing acne or irritation needs attention alongside pigment treatment.
  2. 2Cleanse before applying vitamin C. If you use toner, apply vitamin C after it. Morning use is useful, although overnight use is also possible.
  3. 3Choose a niacinamide product with directions you can follow. A serum and a combination spot cream are not interchangeable routines.
  4. 4Apply sunscreen before going outside to exposed skin. For postinflammatory pigmentation, SPF 50 or higher with broad spectrum protection is a practical choice.
  5. 5Reapply sunscreen every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating. A wide brimmed hat adds protection.

For darker skin tones, tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide also protects against visible light that contributes to dark spots. Look for water resistance and a tint that blends with your skin tone. Iron oxide appears among inactive ingredients because it protects against visible light rather than ultraviolet light.5

What should I look for on the bottle?

For vitamin C, look for ascorbic acid or L ascorbic acid. Sensitive skin should start at a lower concentration; concentrations above 20% risk significant irritation. Choose dark or tinted packaging because vitamin C is sensitive to sun, heat and light. For niacinamide, also called nicotinamide, choose the whole formula rather than assuming a larger percentage means better fading.23

Is niacinamide or vitamin C better for acne marks?

For brown pigment left after acne, both are options rather than a clear winner. Treating active acne is the more consequential decision: continued inflammation keeps creating new marks. Pigment treatment should accompany control of the breakouts, not replace it. These dark spot benefits concern discolouration, not a treatment plan for every kind of acne scar.45

How long should I wait for improvement?

Allow about three months to judge vitamin C. Take a photograph without makeup before starting and once a month afterwards. There is no equally specific niacinamide timetable here. Untreated surface pigmentation can take months to years to resolve, while deeper pigment can persist for much longer. Improvement is not the same as preventing recurrence: sunlight and renewed inflammation can darken pigmentation again.134

When should I stop or get help?

Stop a product that burns or stings. Irritation can worsen postinflammatory pigmentation, so adding more treatments is not automatically progress. If dark spots remain difficult to treat, a dermatologist can assess the pigment and combine treatments safely. Peels, lasers and intense pulsed light can aggravate pigmentation by injuring the outer skin layer and do not treat pigment deep in the dermis. If you suspect a prescription medicine is causing dark spots, speak with its prescriber rather than stopping it yourself.145
