What do closed comedones look like?
Closed comedones usually look like small, skin coloured bumps, sometimes with a white or yellowish tint. They give the skin a rough or bumpy texture and are generally not tender or swollen. Unlike a blackhead, a closed comedone has no open surface. Unlike a pus filled pimple, it usually has no obvious redness. The forehead and chin are common locations, although other areas can be affected.13
Why can dry skin have blocked pores?
Dryness and clogged pores can exist together. A comedone forms when skin cells and sebum, the skin's natural oil, collect inside a follicle. Changes in the cells lining the follicle and increased oil production contribute to the blockage. Some cosmetics, oily hair products and abrasive washing can also contribute. Dryness is not a reason to scrub harder: exfoliating dry, peeling skin strips away more moisture rather than correcting the dryness.45
Should you still use moisturizer?
Yes. Moisturizer adds moisture and helps prevent water from leaving the skin. Moisturizer comes in gels, lotions, creams and ointments, because even moisturizing has a filing system. Creams and ointments are more effective for dryness than lotions. For dry skin with blocked pores, look for a fragrance free moisturizer labeled noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to block pores. Ceramides and hyaluronic acid are useful moisturizing ingredients. If only parts of your face are dry, focus richer moisturizing care on those areas rather than treating every area identically.56
How should you care for dry skin with closed comedones?
Cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection belong in the routine, without giving every bottle in the bathroom a permanent position.1
- 1Wash gently with a fragrance free cleanser in the morning and evening. Remove makeup before bed, and avoid scrubbing or building up a thick lather.
- 2Apply moisturizer while the skin is still damp after washing. Use it at least twice daily, and reapply when your skin feels dry.
- 3During the day, apply broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Seek shade and wear clothing that protects your skin from the sun.
What treatments help without worsening dryness?
Treatments for comedonal acne include salicylic acid, azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide and retinoids. These are acne treatments, not substitutes for moisturizer. General comedonal acne treatment involves a thin layer over the entire affected area, rather than treating only individual bumps. Follow the particular product's directions or your prescription for frequency. If your skin is already excessively dry, avoid retinoids and exfoliating dry, peeling areas; ask a dermatologist to help choose treatment that addresses both problems. Dry skin guidance also advises avoiding alcohol and fragrance.46
How long do closed comedones take to clear?
With consistent care and treatment, improvement can start in eight to twelve weeks, while clearing can take several months. Maintenance treatment is often needed because comedonal acne can return. Do not pick, squeeze or puncture the bumps yourself. Professional extraction is an option for persistent clogs; home extraction risks scars, infection and further damage to follicles.14
When should you see a dermatologist?
Arrange an assessment if you are unsure what the bumps are or treatment is not helping. Seek help for dryness that becomes painful, cracked, bleeding or very irritating. Tell your dermatologist if skincare, including moisturizer, burns or stings, or if acne medication causes side effects. Persistent dryness despite gentle care also deserves assessment rather than more exfoliation.156
