What does acne prone mean?

In everyday skincare language, prone means likely to develop something. Acne prone describes the tendency; acne describes the condition itself. Breakouts can clear with treatment and then flare again, so a clear spell does not necessarily mean the tendency has gone. The word prone describes a tendency, not a booking confirmation for your next pimple.12

Why does acne prone skin break out?

Acne involves hair follicles and their oil glands. A follicle is the small canal where a hair grows, opening at the skin surface through a pore. Oil and dead skin cells can block that opening, forming a comedone, the medical name for a blackhead or whitehead. Bacteria in the blocked follicle can contribute to inflammation, producing swollen pimples. Deeper inflammation can produce larger, painful lumps.34

Hormones help explain why some people break out more than others. During puberty, hormones called androgens enlarge oil glands and increase oil production. Family history also matters: having a close relative with severe acne raises your risk of that type of acne. Stress can worsen existing acne, but it does not cause acne on its own. Oily skincare, makeup and hair products can also worsen breakouts.1

How can you tell whether your skin is acne prone?

Repeated breakouts are a practical clue. Acne commonly affects the face, chest and back, and you can have more than one kind of spot at once:4

  • Whiteheads are small bumps that look skin coloured.
  • Blackheads are dark spots that can be flat or raised.
  • Papules are raised bumps that can look pink or red on white skin and brown or purple on brown and black skin.
  • Pustules are raised bumps containing pus.
  • Nodules and cysts are larger lumps beneath the skin and can be painful.
4

Oily skin can accompany acne, but oiliness alone is not the same as having acne. Look at the pattern of spots rather than shine alone. Acne can begin in adulthood, because the teenage years do not have exclusive rights to the subject. A clinician can usually diagnose acne by examining your skin; testing is not usually needed.234

Does acne prone mean dirty skin?

No. Blackheads and pimples are not caused by dirt. Scrubbing does not address the blocked follicle and can irritate skin, making acne worse. Popping a pimple can push bacteria deeper into the skin, increasing pain and swelling and sometimes causing permanent scars.456

How should you care for acne prone skin?

  • Wash gently with a mild cleanser once or twice daily, including after exercise. Avoid repeated washing and scrubbing.
  • Remove makeup before bed. Choose water based or noncomedogenic skincare and cosmetics, meaning formulas intended not to clog pores.
  • Avoid picking, squeezing and rubbing spots.
  • If skincare alone is not enough, ask a pharmacist about acne treatments such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Follow the product directions rather than applying extra.

Clearing acne generally needs both suitable skincare and treatment matched to the types of blemishes you have. Acne medicines can cause redness, dryness or excessive peeling. Improvement can take 6 to 8 weeks, so judging treatment after a few days is too early.27

When should you get medical help?

See a doctor if spots are deep or painful, leave scars, keep worsening or affect your mental health. Get medical advice for hot, swollen skin with redness, which can signal infection. Redness can be harder to see on brown and black skin. Also seek help if treating acne yourself is not improving it; prescription treatments or a dermatologist referral can be the next step.24
