Does dehydrated skin lack water or oil?
Water is the direct answer, but oil still matters. Skin's protective barrier contains fats that help limit water loss. Losing those fats can leave skin less able to retain moisture. Dry skin can therefore involve a shortage of both water and oil, rather than fitting neatly into separate categories. Water and oil do different jobs in skin, even if skincare marketing files both under "glow".23
How does skin hold onto water?
The outer skin layer contains natural moisturizing factor, a collection of substances that draw in and bind water. These include amino acids, lactic acid and urea. Between the skin cells, ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids help form a barrier that limits water escaping. Reduced water binding substances or disruption of these fats can increase water loss. Dehydration is therefore not just about how much water reaches skin, but how well skin retains it.2
What can a lack of moisture feel like?
Skin short of moisture can feel tight or rough, with flaking, scaling or itching. More severe dryness can cause cracks and bleeding. These signs do not identify a single cause: irritating products and skin conditions can also cause dry, itchy patches. A persistent rash needs more than a decision about whether to call the skin dry or dehydrated.4
What makes skin lose moisture?
Cold or dry air, indoor heating and cooling, long or frequent baths, and some soaps and detergents can contribute. Hot water and soap remove protective surface oil. Aging, certain medicines and medical conditions can also cause dryness. If dryness began after a medication change, discuss it with the prescriber rather than changing treatment yourself.135
How do you restore moisture?
- 1Wash only as often as needed. Use lukewarm rather than hot water, and choose a gentle cleanser without soap, dyes or perfume.
- 2Pat skin dry rather than rubbing it. Apply moisturizer while skin is still damp to help retain the water left after washing.
- 3Choose a moisturizer that helps bind water and slow its escape. Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it helps skin hold water; occlusive ingredients form a surface layer that reduces water loss.
- 4Apply moisturizer in the morning and before bed, as well as after bathing. Reapply during the day when needed, especially on very dry areas.
Which moisturizer texture should you choose?
Lotions suit mild dryness and hairy areas. Creams suit moderately dry skin, while ointments provide the strongest moisture seal for very dry, scaly areas but can feel greasy. For extremely dry skin, creams and ointments generally retain moisture better than lotions. A lotion, cream and ointment are different ways to retain moisture, not three compulsory stages of a bathroom renovation.15
If skin is scratched, cracked or inflamed, urea and lactic acid preparations can sting. Moisturizers can also cause irritation or aggravate acne. Stop a product that causes burning, a new rash or worsening irritation, and seek advice if the reaction persists.1
How long should improvement take?
When home care works for dry skin, improvement usually appears within two weeks. See a dermatologist if dryness continues, worsens or keeps returning. Cracks that bleed or become painful sores need care because broken skin allows germs to enter. Persistent dryness can reflect a skin condition or another cause that moisturizer alone will not resolve.45
