Is dehydrated skin different from dry skin?

The terms overlap: dry skin also involves too little moisture in the outer layer. Treating them as completely separate problems makes the distinction tidier than the biology. Natural oils and other skin lipids help limit water loss, so water and oil are connected rather than competing explanations. The skin barrier controls water escaping and substances entering, which is a more useful job than looking impressive on a serum box.145

What does moisture loss look like?

Skin lacking moisture can feel dry to the touch and look dull, rough or scaly. It becomes less flexible and can develop cracks. More severe dryness can involve inflammation, itching or bleeding. These signs are not a diagnosis by themselves: persistent itching or inflamed patches can involve dermatitis, meaning skin inflammation, rather than a hydration problem alone.14

Why does skin lose moisture?

Low humidity, cold weather, indoor heating and air conditioning can contribute. Indoor heating can make skin dry and chapped, giving winter an indoor branch. Frequent washing, hot water, soap and rough towel drying can also disturb the barrier. Fragrance can worsen skin that is already dry and irritated. Age, certain medicines and underlying conditions can contribute too, so dryness that persists deserves more than another product purchase.34

How do you care for dehydrated skin?

  1. 1Reduce moisture stripping during washing. Use lukewarm rather than hot water. Keep showers to 5 to 10 minutes instead of taking a prolonged hot bath.
  2. 2Choose a fragrance free cleanser rather than a high pH soap bar or antibacterial cleanser. A syndet cleanser uses synthetic detergents and can be formulated closer to the skin's natural acidity.
  3. 3Pat or blot skin after washing instead of rubbing it with a towel. Leave skin damp for the next step.
  4. 4Apply a fragrance free moisturizer immediately after washing. For very dry skin, choose a cream or ointment rather than a lotion.
  5. 5Reapply moisturizer throughout the day as needed, including after every hand wash. Application after washing matters more than reserving moisturizer for a particular time of day.
  6. 6Address dry surroundings. A humidifier can help prevent and treat dryness when indoor air lacks moisture.

What should a moisturizer do?

Moisturizers help improve barrier function and reduce water escaping through the skin. Humectants, ingredients that help hold moisture, include urea and propylene glycol. Other useful ingredients for dry skin include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone and petrolatum. Choose a formula you tolerate and can apply regularly; the ingredient list is not a contest to collect the most recognizable names.14

How long should improvement take?

When home care works, dry skin tends to improve within 2 weeks. See a dermatologist if dryness continues or worsens, particularly with substantial itching, inflammation or cracks. A dermatologist can assess whether the cause is dry air, medication or a skin condition. Dry or thickening skin that develops during cancer treatment needs prompt dermatology care.3

Is a skin pinch test useful?

A pinch test checks skin turgor, the ability of skin to return to its normal shape. Poor turgor can indicate body fluid loss, which is a different concern from a dry surface. Seek medical care promptly if pinched skin returns very slowly or stays raised, especially with vomiting, diarrhea or fever, or if you cannot take in enough fluids. Some connective tissue disorders also affect skin elasticity without reflecting fluid loss.6
