What should you look for?

When dryness contributes to a dull appearance, the visible and physical clues include:

  • A dull surface with a rough or scaly texture.
  • Flaking or small dry patches.
  • Skin that feels dry to the touch and less flexible.
  • Cracks in the surface when dryness is more pronounced.
13

Dullness is not one particular color. Skin discoloration means a change from the color that is normal for you, and patches can be brown, red, white, pink, purple or black. A distinct new patch is not something to automatically file under "needs more glow."2

Why does my skin look dull?

Dryness is one explanation. When the outer layer of skin lacks moisture, the surface becomes rough, scaly and dull. Cold or windy weather, low humidity, excessive air conditioning, frequent bathing and contact with soap can contribute. Skin also loses moisture with age, so dryness can become more noticeable over time.13

Several different changes can make a face look less fresh. Sun damage can cause spots and uneven pigmentation. Poor sleep can show up as dark circles and sagging around the eyes. Dehydration can cause dry skin or a sunken appearance around the eyes, while smoking can give skin a pale or sallow color. These are different clues, not interchangeable explanations for every dull complexion.4

What helps if your skin is dull and dry?

Start with moisture rather than trying to scrub the dullness away. Moisturizer can make skin look brighter by trapping water, which is less theatrical than the word "radiance" suggests. For sensitive skin, choose mild products without fragrance; "unscented" products can still contain masking fragrances.5

  1. 1Wash your face daily and after exercise with a mild facial cleanser and lukewarm water.
  2. 2Pat dry gently, leaving the skin damp rather than rubbing or scrubbing.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer immediately after washing. For dry facial skin, apply it within five minutes and moisturize more than once daily if needed.
  4. 4Before going outdoors, apply a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating.

If dryness started after a routine change, review more than your cleanser: makeup and shampoo can also contribute. Retinol and astringent toners can dry skin. If retinol is part of your routine, adding moisturizing products can help balance that dryness.3

Does dull skin need exfoliation?

Removing surface dead skin cells can improve a dull complexion. Dermaplaning, for example, removes dead cells and peach fuzz and leaves skin a little smoother and brighter. That makes "glow" partly a matter of surface maintenance, despite its rather grand advertising career.6

But dry flakes are not an instruction to exfoliate. Exfoliation can remove more skin than intended and create an irritating cycle of damage. Treat dryness gently first. Skip dermaplaning during an acne breakout, an eczema flare or another active skin problem.36

When should you get a skin change checked?

See a healthcare provider for new or changing discoloration, markings or moles. Also get dry facial skin checked if it is not improving, stays pink, looks wet and red, or itches enough to interfere with daily life. A new gray or yellowish skin color deserves assessment rather than another brightening product, especially with other symptoms.234
