Which term describes what you mean?
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Desquamation | Shedding or peeling of the outer layer of skin, called the epidermis. |
| Xerosis or xeroderma | Dry skin, which can feel rough and look flaky or scaly. Xerosis is also used specifically for severely dry skin. |
| Dry desquamation | A skin reaction with scaling and itching. The medical word for itching is pruritus. |
| Dermatitis | Skin inflammation, rather than another word for flakes. |
The surface of your skin contains layers of dead cells that loosen and fall away as new cells form underneath. Visible peeling can happen as skin recovers from damage. Flakes alone do not identify whether the cause is dryness, irritation, an infection or a skin condition.15
Does flaky skin always mean dry skin?
No. Dry skin lacks enough moisture to stay soft and can feel rough, tight or itchy. Severe dryness can crack and bleed. Cold weather, low humidity, indoor heating, frequent washing and harsh toweling can contribute. Skin's natural oils help keep water inside its outer barrier; washing can remove those oils, and friction can disturb the barrier.23
Other causes include sunburn, contact dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis and fungal infections. Seborrheic dermatitis can cause flaky patches on the scalp, face or chest. Athlete's foot can resemble dry skin on the soles, but its cause is a fungus. Retinol creams, chemical peels and some acne treatments can also cause peeling. The cause changes the treatment: moisturizer addresses dryness, while an infection or inflammatory condition can need a different approach.13
What can you do for flakes caused by dryness?
- 1Keep showers short, about 5 to 10 minutes, and use warm rather than hot water.
- 2Wash with a gentle, fragrance free cleanser rather than a high pH soap bar. Avoid antibacterial soaps and cleansers.
- 3Pat or blot your skin dry instead of rubbing it with a towel.
- 4Apply a fragrance free moisturizer immediately after washing. For dry skin, choose an ointment or cream rather than a lotion.
- 5Continue moisturizing in the morning and before bed, and moisturize your hands after every hand wash.
A humidifier can help if the air is dry. Fragrance, whether natural or synthetic, can worsen already irritated dry skin. Let peeling skin come away naturally rather than picking or pulling it off, which can create openings for bacteria and increase the risk of infection.12
When should a doctor check flaky skin?
Contact a healthcare professional for unexplained peeling, dryness that does not go away or keeps returning, or signs of infection such as fever or chills. Treatment depends on the cause, rather than on whether the flakes are called desquamation or xerosis.13
A dermatologist looks at where the changes occur, their shape, color and surface, and whether flakes come away easily. A lesion is any single area of altered skin, so the vocabulary sounds more dramatic than the definition. Bring the names and doses of medications, vitamins and supplements you take; your clinician will also ask about symptoms and medical and family history.15
Is peeling skin syndrome the same thing?
No. Acral peeling skin syndrome, also called peeling skin syndrome 2, is a rare inherited disorder with painless peeling, mainly on the hands and feet. It usually starts soon after birth but can begin later. Heat, moisture and friction worsen the peeling. It is a specific condition, not the general medical name for flaky skin.6
