Why is the zinc oxide visible?
Zinc oxide reflects visible light, which explains the white appearance. Its sunscreen protection works mainly by absorbing ultraviolet radiation, the invisible radiation that damages skin. The visible cast and the sun protection are not the same thing. Smaller mineral particles reduce white residue and improve how sunscreen spreads. CeraVe AM uses microfine zinc oxide and is designed to dry clear, but mineral particles can still show. InVisibleZinc is an ambitious name for something you are currently looking at.24
Which CeraVe AM formula do you have?
| US version | Active sunscreen ingredients | Finish |
|---|---|---|
| SPF 30 manufacturer formula | Zinc oxide 8%, homosalate 10%, octinoxate 5%, octocrylene 2% | Lightweight lotion designed to dry clear |
| SPF 30 label updated December 2023 | Zinc oxide 6.3%, homosalate 10%, meradimate 5%, octinoxate 5%, octocrylene 2% | A different listed formula; identify yours by the bottle |
| SPF 50 manufacturer formula | Zinc oxide 7%, homosalate 8%, octisalate 5%, octocrylene 5% | Lightweight lotion designed to blend into all skin tones without white residue |
Both current manufacturer formulas combine mineral and chemical sunscreen filters. SPF 50 still contains zinc oxide; a higher SPF number does not mean a mineral free formula. CeraVe updates ingredient lists, so use the list on your package to identify what you actually own. Both lotions are intended for normal to dry skin.23
How should you apply it?
- 1Cleanse your face in the morning, then apply any treatments before CeraVe AM.
- 2Apply CeraVe AM liberally as the final skincare step, 15 minutes before sun exposure. Spread the lotion evenly rather than leaving concentrated patches.
- 3Let the lotion fully absorb before applying makeup. Assess the finish at that point rather than while the lotion is still being spread.
- 4Reapply at least every two hours for sunscreen protection. Use a water resistant sunscreen if you will be swimming or sweating.
Do not reduce the amount just to make the white cast less noticeable. Sunscreen needs sufficient coverage to deliver its expected protection; applying too little can leave you below the protection on the label. The 15 minute instruction is about applying before sun exposure, not a deadline by which the white cast must disappear.45
What if the white cast stays?
If the fully absorbed finish is still too pale, choose a different sunscreen rather than underapplying this one. Chemical sunscreens are usually transparent and tend to have a lighter, more blendable texture than mineral sunscreens. A sunscreen you are willing to use properly is the useful choice, even if it loses the bathroom shelf beauty contest. CeraVe AM SPF 50 is another option to consider because it is formulated for a clear finish across skin tones. Choose it for that finish goal, not because zinc oxide has disappeared from the formula.13
When should you stop using it?
Stop using CeraVe AM and ask a doctor if a rash occurs. Do not apply it to damaged or broken skin. Keep it out of your eyes, and rinse with water if it gets in them. When choosing a replacement, chemical sunscreens can cause irritation or allergic reactions, while mineral sunscreens are generally better tolerated by sensitive skin.15
