What makes your skin produce more oil?
Excessively oily skin is called seborrhoea. It comes from overactive sebaceous glands, which are the glands that make sebum. The face and scalp are most commonly affected. Oiliness can also make makeup run or cake, so a carefully applied finish can acquire its own afternoon plans.2
Hormonal changes can increase oil production. If oiliness comes with breakouts, useful patterns to notice include changes around your period, pregnancy, menopause or stopping birth control. Testosterone treatment and steroid medicines can also contribute to hormonal acne. These patterns are clues to discuss with a clinician, not a diagnosis you can make from shine alone.3
A harsh cleanser can irritate skin and trigger increased oil production. Scrubbing also irritates skin. Trying to dry your face out with stronger washing can therefore work against oil control. Stress and lack of sleep can contribute to hormonal acne, while high humidity can worsen it; those are breakout factors, not proof of why your face looks shiny today.34
How to manage oil from morning to night
- 1Cleanse gently in the morning and evening, and after sweating. Use a mild, gentle foaming cleanser rather than a harsh wash. Avoid scrubbing and cleansers based on oil or alcohol.
- 2Apply moisturizer after cleansing. Oily skin still needs hydration. Choose products labelled oil free and noncomedogenic, meaning designed not to clog pores.
- 3Use sunscreen outdoors. A moisturizer containing broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher can combine moisturizing and sun protection.
- 4During the day, press blotting paper against shiny areas for a few seconds. Do not rub it, because rubbing spreads the oil.
- 5At night, remove makeup before sleeping. Avoid touching your face during the day, and use clean hands when applying skincare or makeup.
For makeup, choose oil free, water based products. Matte makeup can help reduce shine, so that word on the packaging has at least one practical assignment.4
Should you add an oil control treatment?
Salicylic acid, glycolic acid and lactic acid can help reduce oiliness, but they can be too harsh for sensitive skin. Stop the product or use it less often if irritation develops. During pregnancy, ask your healthcare provider which acne treatments are suitable before starting one.34
Oiliness and acne are related, but they are not the same problem. Blackheads and whiteheads form when sebum and dead skin cells clog pores. Treatments for these clogs include salicylic acid and retinoids. Improvement in comedonal acne, meaning blackheads and whiteheads, can take eight to twelve weeks, and clearing it can take months. That is a breakout timeline, not a deadline for eliminating daytime shine.1
Does food affect oil production?
Blood sugar spikes can increase sebum production. Foods that raise blood sugar quickly include white bread, sugary drinks and fries. A diet with fewer of these foods may reduce acne, but the connection is not settled. If you also have breakouts, watch for repeat food triggers rather than assuming one meal explains the afternoon shine. Diet changes alone do not replace acne skincare and treatment.5
When should you get oily skin checked?
Greasy skin with persistent scaling or a rash around the eyebrows, sides of the nose or scalp deserves a medical assessment. Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a recurring inflammatory skin condition that commonly affects these areas and can combine oily and dry skin. More aggressive oil removal is not a substitute for treating the rash.6
See a dermatologist if oiliness concerns you or acne persists or worsens. Most people with excessively oily skin have no other health problems. New oiliness accompanied by coarser skin, increased sweating or changes in facial features should be assessed by a doctor, because excess growth hormone can cause this combination.247
