Is zinc oxide antifungal?

Zinc oxide is the barrier ingredient, not the antifungal treatment, in this combination. The barrier protects skin and allows it to heal; miconazole kills fungus or prevents its growth. Treating fungus and protecting skin are different jobs, even when both departments share a tube. For irritated skin folds, zinc oxide or petroleum ointments can also reduce friction, while an antifungal such as clotrimazole or miconazole addresses fungal growth.23

Which product fits the problem?

Vusion contains 0.25% miconazole nitrate, 15% zinc oxide and 81.35% white petrolatum. Its intended use is diaper rash with confirmed candidiasis, meaning a Candida yeast infection, in children aged 4 weeks or older with a normally functioning immune system. Confirmation requires microscopic examination; a positive Candida culture alone is not enough because yeast can be present without causing infection.1

For an adult skin fold rash, ringworm or athlete's foot, choose treatment for that condition rather than borrowing Vusion's diaper rash schedule. Intertrigo means inflammation where skin surfaces meet, and moisture, bacteria or fungus can contribute. A pharmacist or doctor can help select an antifungal when infection is suspected. The number of ingredients on the box is not a diagnosis, however confidently the box is printed.34

How to apply Vusion

1. 1Wash your hands before application.
2. 2Gently clean the diaper area with lukewarm water, then pat dry with a soft towel. Avoid scented soaps, shampoos and lotions there.
3. 3Gently apply a thin layer at each diaper change. Do not rub the ointment into the skin.
4. 4Wash your hands afterwards and continue frequent diaper changes.

Use Vusion for the full 7 days, even if the rash improves sooner, but do not use it longer than 7 days. Applications follow diaper changes rather than a morning or evening skincare routine. Do not use Vusion to prevent diaper rash, because preventive use can encourage drug resistance. The ointment does not replace frequent diaper changes.5

Can you layer zinc oxide over a separate antifungal?

Barrier ointments and antifungals both have roles in skin fold care, but there is no single application order or schedule for every combination. Before adding another skin product over Vusion, ask your care team. For a separate clotrimazole skin cream, follow its own packet: external cream is generally applied thinly 2 or 3 times daily for 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the infection. Those directions are not Vusion's directions.236

When should you get medical advice?

Stop Vusion and contact the prescriber if irritation develops or the rash worsens. If symptoms have not improved by day 7, arrange a review. Skin ringworm commonly needs 2 to 4 weeks of topical antifungal treatment, so the same deadline does not apply to every fungal infection. For a skin fold rash, seek care if home treatment does not clear it or it spreads beyond the fold.137

Discuss treatment first for infants under 4 weeks, very low birth weight infants, people with weakened immune systems, or adults with incontinence. Tell the clinician about ingredient allergies, pregnancy, breastfeeding and other medicines. Vusion's pregnancy risk and potential interaction with warfarin are unknown. Clotrimazole can usually be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding after checking with a pharmacist or doctor. Keep Vusion out of the mouth, eyes and vagina. Get emergency help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face or tongue.1246
