Adapalene is a reasonable starting option for mild blackheads, whiteheads and small pimples when you want treatment without a prescription. Deep, painful spots or acne that leaves scars need a dermatologist rather than another shopping comparison. Noncomedogenic skincare means products that do not clog pores, which is a more useful job description than looking impressive on a shelf.12
Is adapalene the same as tretinoin?
No. Both belong to the retinoid family and help prevent acne, but they are different medicines. Tretinoin helps reduce the formation of tiny pore plugs and increases the turnover of cells inside follicles, helping existing plugs come out. A prescription does not mean you should automatically switch from an acne treatment that is helping.24
What does adapalene do for skin?
Adapalene helps clear blackheads, whiteheads and pimples. Apply acne medication across acne prone skin rather than only visible spots: treating the whole area also helps prevent the next breakout. General acne treatment timelines are fewer breakouts after 4 to 8 weeks and clearing around 16 weeks when treatment works. Those are acne treatment timelines, not a reason to declare one retinoid faster.2
How do you use adapalene?
- 1Gently cleanse the affected skin and pat it dry.
- 2Apply a thin layer of Differin 0.1% gel across the affected area once daily, at the same time each day.
- 3Keep the gel away from your eyes, lips and mouth, then wash your hands.
- 4Use moisturizer for dryness. If applying during the day, let the gel dry before applying sunscreen.
For everyday acne care, use a gentle cleanser rather than treating the bathroom shelf as a product recruitment programme. Avoid scrubbing, which can irritate skin and worsen acne. With tretinoin, abrasive cleansers, drying cosmetics and other topical medicines need particular care; salicylic acid products can also increase irritation.14
Can you use adapalene and tretinoin together?
Do not add both to your routine on your own. Using multiple topical acne medicines increases irritation risk, and tretinoin requires caution with other topical medication. If you are changing treatments, ask your prescriber how to switch rather than layering them.34
When should you stop or get help?
Differin can cause early dryness, redness, itching or burning, and acne can initially look worse. Stop and ask a doctor for severe irritation, an allergic reaction or no improvement after three months. Do not apply Differin to damaged, sunburned or eczematous skin. Tretinoin also needs particular caution with eczema. Limit sun exposure and use sunscreen with either treatment.34
Avoid both during pregnancy and while planning pregnancy. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop and contact your healthcare team. Most reported pregnancies exposed to topical retinoids have had unaffected babies, but uncertainty remains. Discuss a replacement acne treatment with your obstetrician or dermatologist. Ask a doctor before using Differin while breastfeeding.3567
