CeraVe sells both Resurfacing and Skin Renewing serums, because one retinol shelf apparently needed departments. The comparison below uses the Canadian Resurfacing formula and US adapalene guidance; CeraVe Skin Renewing is another option for fine lines and uneven texture.3

For blackheads, whiteheads and some pimples, adapalene is the more directly targeted choice. Acne retinoids clear pores and can also lighten dark spots after acne clears, so ongoing breakouts plus marks do not automatically require two products. If acne is already controlled and marks or visible pores are the priority, CeraVe Resurfacing fits that goal. Neither is a home treatment for severe acne or persistent scarring.245

CeraVe's US listings price Resurfacing at $21.99 and Skin Renewing at $24.99, so the longer name also gets the larger receipt. Compare the local price and pack size of your chosen adapalene product before deciding on cost.3

How do you start using either one?

  1. 1Cleanse gently and pat your skin dry. Avoid harsh cleansers and scrubbing.
  2. 2For CeraVe Resurfacing, apply a pea sized amount at night. If your skin is sensitive, start once or twice weekly and apply moisturizer first. Otherwise, follow its daily directions and space applications out if discomfort occurs.
  3. 3For adapalene gel or cream, spread a thin film over the entire affected area, not just individual pimples. Follow the package or prescription directions rather than borrowing the serum's dose.
  4. 4Moisturize and use broad spectrum, water resistant SPF 30 or higher during the day. Seek shade and wear protective clothing too.

Avoid strong exfoliation on the same night as CeraVe Resurfacing until your skin adjusts. With adapalene, tell your doctor about other medicines and skin products, especially anything harsh or drying. If adapalene irritates your skin, ask about adjusting its frequency rather than changing a prescription routine yourself. Do not hot wax treated areas.145

How long does each take?

CeraVe reports improved appearance of texture in four weeks for its Canadian Resurfacing serum; stubborn marks take longer. For acne treatment generally, fewer breakouts usually begin after at least six to eight weeks. Adapalene's full benefit can take eight to twelve weeks or longer, and acne can initially worsen. Applying extra adapalene does not speed results.145

Who should be careful, and when should you stop?

Do not use either during pregnancy. Discuss planned pregnancy or breastfeeding with your clinician. Dryness, skin allergies or significant redness warrant advice before starting a retinoid. On darker skin, irritation can trigger extra dark marks, making a slow start and moisturizer especially useful.16

Stop CeraVe Resurfacing for persistent stinging or rash. With adapalene, contact your doctor for burning, irritation or severe or persistent side effects. Keep adapalene off broken, sunburned or eczema affected skin. Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty or facial or throat swelling. See a dermatologist for severe cystic acne or persistent scarring.124
