What can aloe vera do for skin?

Aloe gel contains sugars that help bind moisture in the skin. Aloe is also a lightweight moisturizing ingredient used in masks for oily or acne prone skin, where hydration can help counter drying ingredients without adding extra oil. That makes hydration a more reasonable goal than expecting a homemade mixture to clear spots or repair damaged skin.12

Aloe has been used for skincare for centuries, which is a long CV rather than a results timetable. There is no established time to results for an aloe and honey face mask, or a tested strength that reliably improves skin.2

Does honey help skin heal?

Honey dressings can help certain wounds heal. For partial thickness burns, which affect the outer skin and part of the layer beneath it, honey dressings shortened healing by about 4 to 5 days compared with conventional dressings. Benefits for minor wounds and several other wound types remain unclear. Those results concern wound treatment, not a cosmetic face mask or honey mixed with aloe. Do not use a homemade mixture as a substitute for wound care.3

Will aloe with honey treat acne or eczema?

Aloe gel used alongside other treatments may improve acne, but the research is small. That does not make aloe with honey an alternative to acne treatment. Aloe's usefulness for eczema remains uncertain, and facial masks cannot replace treatment for either condition. If you already have a treatment plan, keep the mask separate from the job your medicine is doing.14

How should you use an aloe and honey mask?

There is no established mixing ratio, application time, frequency or overnight schedule for a homemade aloe and honey mask. For a formulated facial mask, use its label directions rather than borrowing a recipe's timing. The following steps are general facial mask guidance, not a tested routine for the homemade mixture.1

  1. 1Test the new mask on small areas of skin before applying it more widely.
  2. 2Apply the mask gently with your fingertips.
  3. 3Follow the label for how long to leave it on and how often to use it. Longer or more frequent use can cause irritation.
  4. 4Wash the mask off immediately if you feel itching, burning or stinging.
  5. 5Apply moisturizer after washing off the mask, and continue your usual cleansing and sun protection.

A facial mask is an optional extra, not a promotion to the head of your skincare routine.1

Who should be careful?

Topical aloe gel is generally well tolerated, but burning, itching, rash and eczema have been reported. An allergy to a mask ingredient can cause contact dermatitis, an itchy inflammatory skin rash. Avoid ingredients you know you are allergic to. Choose masks without fragrance or essential oils, and avoid duplicating exfoliating acids or retinol already in your routine. See a dermatologist if your skin feels worse after using a mask.15

Aloe gel and an aloe drink are different choices

The clear inner leaf gel is different from aloe latex, the yellow sap, and whole leaf preparations. Applying aloe gel to skin is generally unlikely to cause harm; swallowing aloe raises separate safety concerns. Oral aloe latex can cause abdominal pain, cramps and diarrhea.256

If you meant drinking aloe with honey, oral aloe may be unsafe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Ask your healthcare provider before using aloe during either period, or if you take medicine. Aloe latex overuse can increase adverse effects from digoxin, a medicine used for some heart problems.4
