What can you actually compare?
| Question | What is known about aloe vera | What remains unsettled |
|---|---|---|
| Does it moisturise? | Aloe can help retain skin moisture. | Whether aloe or panthenol gives better hydration. |
| Does it help burns? | Topical aloe gel may speed burn healing and reduce pain. | Whether it performs better than panthenol. |
| Is it comfortable on skin? | Aloe gel is generally well tolerated, but irritation and allergic reactions occur. | Which ingredient is better tolerated in a comparable finished product. |
Aloe appears in creams, lotions, soaps and facial cleansers, so the name on the front does not even tell you which job the bottle has. Texture, application directions and price need to be compared between actual products rather than ingredient names.2
What should you expect from aloe vera?
Aloe gel is used for its soothing, moisturising and cooling qualities. Its potential benefits extend beyond that feeling: topical aloe gel may help burns heal faster and reduce burn pain. That does not make aloe a dependable treatment for every wound. Its role in healing acute and chronic wounds remains uncertain.234
How should you use it?
Aloe skincare usually uses the clear gel from inside the leaf; latex from the outer layer and whole leaf preparations are different forms. For an aloe skincare product, use its own directions rather than assigning every aloe formula the same amount, frequency or place in your routine. There is no established universal strength or timeline for choosing aloe over panthenol. Aloe has a long history of skincare use, but an ancient pedigree is not a set of application instructions.235
Who should be careful with aloe?
Avoid topical aloe if you have a known allergy to aloe gel. Burning, itching, rash, hives and allergic contact dermatitis, an allergic skin reaction, can occur. Stop applying the product if these develop and seek medical advice about a persistent reaction.23
Applying aloe gel is not the same as drinking aloe or taking an aloe supplement. Oral aloe can interact with medicines and may be unsafe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking prescription medicines, discuss aloe use with your healthcare professional rather than treating all aloe preparations as interchangeable.26
