What does each ingredient do?
Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it attracts and retains water in the outermost skin layer. Moisturizers can also contain ingredients that soften skin and ingredients that reduce water loss, such as dimethicone or petrolatum. Moisturizers can combine ingredients with different jobs, so the bathroom shelf does not need separate departments.1
Aloe vera gel comes from the inner leaf and is about 99% water. It is used as a base in creams and lotions, and research suggests it can support moisture retention. That makes hydration a reasonable goal; an extra benefit from combining aloe with glycerin, or a precise homemade ratio, remains unsettled.234
Should you mix them yourself?
A ready made moisturizer containing glycerin is the practical starting point. Aloe can be another ingredient in the formula, rather than something you have to add separately. Creams and lotions are prone to microbial contamination, which is why formulated products use preservatives. Do not assume a homemade mixture has a known shelf life or that refrigeration supplies a preservation system.15
How to use them for dry skin
Use this general moisturizing approach rather than treating the combination as a special treatment protocol.
- 1Wash gently. Use warm water and a gentle cleanser, and avoid working up a thick lather.
- 2Pat your skin with a clean towel, leaving it slightly damp rather than rubbing it completely dry.
- 3Gently massage in a fragrance free moisturizer containing glycerin. If you want aloe too, choosing a moisturizer containing both avoids needing a separate mixing step.
- 4Reapply moisturizer when your skin feels dry, including after washing. Moisturizers can be applied at other times as well as after bathing.
For dry skin, creams and ointments add more moisture than lotions. Ointments provide more protection against water loss but can feel greasy; creams are lighter. Choose the whole moisturizer rather than shopping for one headline ingredient, which rarely gives the rest of the formula any speaking lines. Look for "fragrance free," not merely "unscented": ingredients used to hide an odor can irritate dry, sensitive skin.15
What should you expect?
The useful target is less dryness and better moisture retention. Moisturizers have their greatest effects in the first six hours after application, so regular use matters more than treating one application as a lasting fix. There is no settled timetable for a glycerin and aloe mixture to improve skin. Aloe's benefits as a wound treatment remain uncertain, so do not use a homemade mixture in place of wound care.14
Who should be careful?
Aloe gel applied to skin is generally well tolerated, but burning, itching and rashes can occur. Avoid aloe if you have a known allergy to it. Stop using a product that causes a rash, and tell your dermatologist if moisturizers cause burning, stinging or irritation. Persistent dryness despite regular moisturizing also deserves a dermatologist visit.3456
Applying aloe gel is different from swallowing aloe latex or whole leaf preparations. Aloe taken by mouth can interact with medicines and may be unsafe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your health care provider before using aloe; if you take medicines, discuss adding an aloe herbal product before changing your routine.467
