How long does glycerin last?

There is no single shelf life to apply to every bottle. The formula, manufacturing process, container and storage conditions all affect stability. A bottle of glycerin and a finished product containing glycerin need their own storage and expiry information. A date belongs to a particular product, not to the word glycerin, which is doing quite enough work on the label already.2

What does the expiry date mean?

For a glycerin medicine, the expiry date marks the period during which the product is known to retain its strength, quality and purity when stored as directed. The date and the storage conditions belong together. A bottle stored incorrectly can degrade before its printed date, so an unexpired label is not a reason to ignore how the bottle has been kept.3

Does opening the bottle matter?

Repeated use and improper storage can change glycerin's quality. Glycerin, also called glycerol, can form impurities as it degrades. Exposure to oxygen and moisture during storage and use matters for pharmaceutical ingredients. Opening a bottle does not give you a universal countdown: use any instructions for storage and use after opening that apply to that product.14

How should you store glycerin?

Follow the bottle's own storage conditions rather than borrowing a temperature range from another glycerin product. Keep the original container unless the manufacturer directs otherwise. Changing containers can affect shelf life because the replacement packaging can offer different protection against moisture and gases. The container is part of the product's stability, not just an unpaid member of the packaging department.2

Can you use glycerin after it expires?

Do not extend a glycerin medicine's expiry date yourself. A degraded medicine can have reduced strength or contain unwanted breakdown products. An expiry extension needs testing for the specific product; storage history matters, too. If your bottle has no readable date or you do not know how it was stored, ask the manufacturer about that exact product before deciding to keep using it.3

Appearance alone is not a reliable way to extend the usable life of old glycerin. Chemical impurities can require laboratory analysis to identify. Checking whether the liquid looks normal cannot replace a product's expiry information, particularly when glycerin is being used as a medicine or as an ingredient in a preparation.12
