Is pure glycerin the same as a glycerin moisturizer?
No. Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it attracts and retains water in the outer layer of skin. A moisturizer can combine humectants with ingredients that soften skin and ingredients that reduce water loss. These are different jobs, not interchangeable names for moisture. A finished moisturizer can handle several of those jobs together, without promoting the bathroom to a formulation department. Directions for applying a glycerin cream are not directions for applying the raw ingredient.12
What does glycerin do for skin?
Glycerin helps skin hold onto water and is a useful ingredient in products for dry skin. Glycerin containing face creams and lip balms can help dry or cracked skin. The skin barrier is the outer protective layer that limits water loss; damage to that barrier increases dryness and sensitivity to irritants. Hydration is therefore more than a temporary change in how skin feels. For very dry skin, a cream or ointment can be more useful than a light lotion, especially in cold, dry weather.345
How should I use a glycerin moisturizer?
- 1Wash with a gentle cleanser and warm, not hot, water.
- 2Rinse and gently pat your skin dry, leaving it slightly damp.
- 3Apply your glycerin containing moisturizer promptly after washing. For body skin, aim to apply it within three minutes of leaving the bath or shower.
- 4Spread the moisturizer gently over the areas that need it. These are general moisturizer steps, not a recipe for using pure glycerin.
- 5In the morning, apply sunscreen after moisturizer. Choose broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
Evening use is a useful option for keeping skin moisturized overnight. Slightly dry skin can need only a light moisturizer at night, while drier skin needs more frequent application. A plain moisturizer without medicinal active ingredients can be reapplied during the day whenever skin feels dry. If you use prescription creams, follow your prescriber's layering instructions; some medicines need to go on before the moisturizer.124
What should I expect?
The useful benefits are reduced dryness and more comfortable skin. Moisturizers have their greatest therapeutic effect in the first six hours after application, so regular use matters more than a single application. That timing describes moisturizers generally, not a deadline for pure glycerin to repair skin. A glycerin cream can be an ordinary general purpose moisturizer, even if the packaging would prefer a more senior job title.12
Who should be careful?
Glycerin containing products can suit oily skin too, but the rest of the formula matters: some occlusive products can aggravate acne. For sensitive skin, choose a sensitive skin formula with few ingredients and avoid fragrance. Introduce only one new product at a time so a reaction is easier to trace. Most barrier creams should not go directly on broken skin.1245
Stop using a moisturizer if dermatitis, an inflamed skin rash, develops. If raw glycerin irritates your skin, wash it off with water; rinse immediately if it enters your eyes. Seek medical advice for persistent irritation, redness, itching, a rash or wounds that do not heal. Excessively dry skin needs treatment, sometimes including a prescription moisturizer or treatment for an underlying condition, rather than simply more glycerin.1267
