What is the difference?
| What matters | Alpha arbutin | Azelaic acid |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | Targeting uneven tone and dark spots | Treating acne and the dark spots acne leaves behind |
| Action | Visibly improves uneven tone and radiance | Opens clogged pores, acts on acne bacteria and reduces acne inflammation |
| Product example | The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA, a water based serum with hyaluronic acid | Topical acne medications including Azelex and Finevin |
| Directions | The Ordinary specifies a few drops morning and evening, plus daytime sun protection | Follow the directions for the particular medication and your treatment plan |
If breakouts are still appearing, azelaic acid addresses more of the problem: existing acne, clogged pores and leftover pigmentation. If your priority is uneven tone without an acne treatment, alpha arbutin is the more focused cosmetic option.12
How do you use them?
The following alpha arbutin directions apply to The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA, not automatically to every arbutin formula. A product's name is not its instruction manual, even when the front label seems to think it has done enough.1
- 1Before using the serum, test a small amount on clean skin on the upper forearm. Keep the area dry and rinse after 24 hours.
- 2Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. Use your fingers, rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean towel.
- 3Apply a few drops of the alpha arbutin serum morning and evening, only on unbroken skin. For azelaic acid medication, follow your prescribed directions instead.
- 4Include moisturizer after washing and sun protection during the day.
Do not use the alpha arbutin serum if the patch test causes redness, burning, itching, blistering or irritation. If irritation develops during use, rinse it off, stop using it and consult a physician. Sensitive skin also needs care with cleansing: acid cleansers can irritate, and hot water and harsh rubbing can disrupt the skin barrier.13
How long should you give treatment?
For acne treatment generally, expect at least 6 to 8 weeks before you start seeing fewer breakouts. That is not a timetable for dark spot fading or a specific promise for azelaic acid. There is no firm alpha arbutin fading deadline to give you. If acne persists despite treatment, a dermatologist can check the diagnosis and build a treatment plan around the types of breakouts you have.2
Melasma, a condition causing brown or gray brown patches, needs a different expectation from a leftover acne mark. It is chronic and can recur, and treatment rests on consistent sun protection. Persistent patches can need a combination of treatments rather than simply switching between these two ingredients.45
How does alpha arbutin compare with kojic acid?
Both are options for pigmentation. Kojic acid slows production of melanin, the brown pigment in skin, and is used for pigment problems and age spots. Continued use can make skin more susceptible to sunburn. There is no clear winner to name between kojic acid and alpha arbutin for speed or tolerability.6
Can you use glycolic acid with alpha arbutin?
Glycolic acid exfoliates and can help irregular pigmentation, but a specific pairing schedule with alpha arbutin is not settled. Two products aimed at uneven tone do not automatically make a coordinated routine, however convincing they look standing next to each other. For a glycolic acid product, start every other day and increase gradually as tolerated. Alpha hydroxy acids can cause irritation and sun sensitivity, so use sunscreen every morning.6
