Aquaphor sells an ointment, a cream and a paste for diaper care, so the brand name alone is doing less identifying than you might hope. These are the US Aquaphor Baby products covered here.1

What is Aquaphor diaper rash paste?

Aquaphor Baby Diaper Rash Paste is the brand's 40% zinc oxide skin protectant, rather than its Healing Ointment. Aquaphor describes the paste as providing protection all night and relieving mild diaper rash discomfort in one use. Relief from discomfort is different from the rash fully clearing.12

How do I apply Aquaphor for diaper rash?

  1. 1Wash your hands before changing the diaper. Change wet or dirty diapers promptly, rather than waiting for the next scheduled change.
  2. 2Gently clean with water and a soft cloth or cotton ball. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing. A squirt bottle lets you rinse particularly sensitive areas without friction.
  3. 3Pat dry or let the skin air dry completely. Give your baby some time without a diaper when possible, with a towel underneath.
  4. 4Apply a protective layer of Baby Healing Ointment to the clean, dry diaper area. Repeat at every diaper change. If using the Baby Diaper Rash Cream, Aquaphor also directs application at bedtime and before prolonged wet diaper exposure.
  5. 5Fasten a fresh diaper loosely enough to avoid rubbing and allow airflow. Wash your hands again afterward.

Do I need to remove every trace at each change?

No. Protective diaper creams and ointments do not need to be completely removed at the next change. Clean away stool gently without scrubbing off all the remaining barrier. The ointment is clear, so protecting against wetness does not also require collecting white cream under your nails.25

How long should the rash take to improve?

Mild diaper rash usually clears within a few days of home care. Expect improvement within two to three days; if the rash is unchanged or worsening, contact your baby's clinician. Keeping skin clean and dry remains part of treatment even when you use a barrier product.35

What if my baby has sensitive skin or an infection?

Diapers, wipes and diaper creams can cause allergic reactions in sensitive skin. If a new product appears to worsen the rash, stop using it and ask for advice. A yeast or bacterial infection needs different treatment from a moisture barrier. Ask your baby's clinician before using an antifungal or steroid cream, including medicines available without a prescription.356

Use water for cleaning, or alcohol free and fragrance free wipes if tolerated. Avoid baby lotion, bubble bath, talcum powder and antiseptic creams on the rash. Choose absorbent diapers that fit properly. For cloth diapers, change liners often and avoid fabric softeners and dryer sheets.136

When should I call the doctor?

  • Call if the rash gets worse or does not improve within two to three days.
  • Seek medical advice for fever, blisters, open sores, bleeding, peeling or pus.
  • Contact a clinician if the rash spreads beyond the diaper area, or your baby is very uncomfortable, in pain or hard to console.
  • Have a rash checked if it develops during the first six weeks after birth.
  • Ask about possible yeast infection if your baby is taking antibiotics and develops a bright red rash with red spots around its edges.
