The moisturiser and steroid do different jobs

Hydrocortisone is a mild steroid medicine that reduces inflammation and swelling in conditions such as eczema, contact dermatitis and insect bite reactions. An emollient is a moisturising treatment that soothes and hydrates skin. A moisturiser traps moisture with a protective film, which is a more useful job than looking impressive on the bathroom shelf. The spacing advice is general guidance for emollients and steroid creams, rather than a special Aquaphor layering rule.13

How to use separate products

  1. 1Ask your doctor which product to apply first. Wait 20 to 30 minutes between applications to avoid diluting the treatment or spreading it onto unaffected skin.
  2. 2Wash your hands, then apply hydrocortisone in a thin layer to the affected area and gently rub it in. Wash your hands afterwards unless you are treating them.
  3. 3Follow your hydrocortisone packet or prescription. Separate hydrocortisone creams and ointments are usually used once or twice daily.
  4. 4Smooth the moisturiser gently in the direction of hair growth. Use it when skin feels dry or tight, including after washing and patting skin dry.

Ointments suit very dry, thickened skin and nighttime use, but should not be used on weeping eczema. Ointments are greasy and very moisturising, so elegance is not their main qualification.1

What about Aquaphor Children's Itch Relief Ointment?

This US product is a hydrocortisone treatment, not just a moisturiser. It is fragrance free and paraben free, and offers immediate soothing and up to 12 hours of significant itch relief. Aquaphor directs application to the affected area no more than 3 to 4 times daily and lists it for children over age 2. Follow the actual package rather than borrowing directions from another hydrocortisone product.2

When to be careful

Do not use hydrocortisone for more than 7 days without medical advice, on cuts or wounds, or under a dressing. Ask a pharmacist or doctor before using it on your face or genitals, during pregnancy, or for a child under 10 under UK guidance. Acne, rosacea and some infections make it unsuitable. Seek advice for persistent irritation or skin thinning, and urgent help for breathing difficulty or vision problems. Keep treated clothing and bedding away from flames and cigarettes.13
