Which type should you choose?

Dryness, uneven tone and wrinkles call for different ingredients. Start with the concern that bothers you most instead of buying several treatments at once. No product treats every sign of skin aging, even if its name appears to have applied for the job.2

Your main concernWhat to look forWhat to expect
DrynessGlycerin or hyaluronic acidThese ingredients attract moisture. Keep a moisturizer in the routine to help retain water.
Uneven tone or dark spotsVitamin CVitamin C helps brighten skin and reduce excess pigment production.
Rough surface textureAn alpha hydroxy acid productChemical exfoliation removes dead surface cells. Follow its directions carefully.
Fine wrinklesConsider a separate retinoid treatment rather than choosing by the essence labelRetinoids are among the most effective topical options for wrinkles, but can cause dryness and irritation.

If dryness is your main problem, start with hydration rather than an exfoliating formula. If your skin is already comfortable but uneven tone bothers you, vitamin C is a more targeted ingredient to consider. For wrinkles, the decision is about the treatment ingredient, not whether the bottle calls itself an essence, serum or cream.13

Why hydration matters for mature skin

Skin produces less oil with age and becomes thinner and more delicate. The shedding of old skin cells also slows, while collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm and stretchy, break down. Dryness and roughness therefore need attention alongside wrinkles. Mature skin is not automatically dry, however: choose for how your skin behaves now, including whether it is oily or sensitive.12

Glycerin and hyaluronic acid are humectants, meaning they attract moisture. Moisturizers also use ingredients that help seal water within the skin, such as petrolatum, silicone and oils. Adding a moisture attracting ingredient is not the same as covering both jobs. If skin remains dry or flaky, focus on the moisturizer rather than adding another essence.35

Thicker, greasier moisturizing products generally moisturize more effectively than lighter ones. Lotions contain water and oil in varying proportions and usually combine moisture attracting and softening ingredients. A light texture can be convenient, but persistently dry skin needs enough moisture retention, not simply another liquid layer. Apply moisturizer after showering and whenever skin feels dry.13

How to fit an essence into your routine

As general layering guidance, treat an essence used for hydration or another skin concern as a treatment step before moisturizer. Prescribed skin medication goes directly after cleansing; keep its instructions in charge of the treatment routine.6

  1. 1Cleanse gently. Use a mild cleanser and pat dry rather than rubbing. Avoid harsh soaps that strip moisture.
  2. 2Apply prescribed medication or treatment immediately after cleansing, following its directions.
  3. 3Apply the essence before moisturizer, using the product's directions for amount and frequency. An exfoliating formula needs particular care: do not apply it more often than directed.
  4. 4Apply moisturizer. For dry mature skin, a fragrance free formula containing glycerin or hyaluronic acid is a useful option.
  5. 5Every morning, apply broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Choose water resistance for outdoor use and reapply every two hours while outdoors.
  6. 6Apply makeup after the skin care steps, if you wear it.
126

Do not assume every essence belongs in both the morning and evening routine. Follow the specific formula's directions, especially if it contains exfoliating ingredients. Gentle exfoliation once or twice a week can refresh the skin's surface, but using too much or applying it too often can leave skin raw and irritated.1

What results should you expect?

Moisturizer can make fine lines less noticeable, which is an awkward detail for a bottle trying to take all the credit. Give moisturizer and sunscreen a few weeks before deciding what additional concern needs treatment. Cosmetic skin care produces modest changes; a claim to quickly erase every sign of aging is not a useful shopping criterion.2

Regular, long term use of ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids, vitamin C and retinoid creams can reduce dryness, and may also improve fine wrinkles and uneven pigmentation. For prescription tretinoin, improvements in fine wrinkling and some signs of sun damage come with use longer than six months. Do not transfer that timetable to a hydrating essence or assume every retinoid formula gives the same result.45

Who should be careful?

For sensitive skin, look for a product formulated for sensitive skin and favor fragrance free moisturizing products. Avoid introducing several products aimed at aging concerns together: the combination can irritate skin and make signs of aging more noticeable. If an exfoliating product leaves skin raw or irritated, stop using it and seek advice from a dermatologist about the routine.126

If an essence contains a retinoid, or you already use a prescription retinoid, account for that treatment before adding more products. Retinoids can cause redness, peeling, dryness and sun sensitivity, and can worsen eczema. They can also irritate skin near the eyes and lips. Some topical retinoids are contraindicated in pregnancy; if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, check the specific product with your clinician before use.4

A spot that changes shape, color or size needs medical evaluation rather than a brightening essence. Have a growing lump or a sore that fails to heal examined as well. These changes can be signs of skin cancer and need a different response from ordinary cosmetic concerns.15

Is an expensive essence worth it?

Effective skin care comes in all price ranges, so the receipt is not a performance report. Pick a product within your budget that targets one concern and suits your skin type. The words "clinically proven" do not mean a cosmetic has undergone clinical trials and received FDA approval. If your moisturizer already keeps skin comfortable and your sunscreen routine is established, choose any extra treatment for a specific remaining concern, not just to complete a set.2
