How do you know you have combination skin?

Combination skin is oily in some places and dry in others. The usual pattern is a shiny forehead, nose and chin, together called the T zone, with drier cheeks. The reverse pattern also counts: dry skin in the center and oilier cheeks. To get a useful starting point, wash and dry your face, wait about 30 minutes, then notice where skin feels oily, tight or dry. Blotting papers can show where oil collects, but observing how your skin looks and feels is enough. Sensitivity is a separate issue: combination skin can also sting, burn or itch after product use.2

Which products should you buy first?

ProductWhat to look forHow to choose
CleanserGentle, fragrance free formulaStart with a water based foaming cleanser; choose a less drying cream cleanser if dryness or sensitivity dominates.
MoisturizerLightweight lotion or gel, with a richer cream for dry patchesMatch the texture to the area rather than covering oily and dry skin with the same rich layer.
SunscreenBroad spectrum SPF 30 or higherA moisturizer with sunscreen can combine two steps; choose water resistant sunscreen for swimming or outdoor exercise.
Optional treatmentAn ingredient for a specific concernAdd a treatment for blackheads or dryness only where needed, rather than treating combination skin itself as a reason for more products.

Look for products labeled noncomedogenic, meaning designed not to clog pores. Oil free formulas are another option for oilier areas. Neither label replaces paying attention to how a product feels on your face. Effective skincare does not have to be expensive, even if the packaging has expensive opinions. Start by spending on the essentials rather than buying several treatments at once; using numerous products can increase both cost and irritation.126

What is a good skincare routine for combination skin?

In the morning

  1. 1Cleanse with a gentle face wash to remove oil and dirt accumulated overnight.
  2. 2Apply an optional treatment after cleansing if you have a specific concern. Leave this step out when the basics meet your needs.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer while skin is still damp to help trap water. Give dry areas the hydration they need and adjust the amount or texture on oilier areas.
  4. 4Finish with broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin, including your neck and the backs of your hands. A moisturizer containing sunscreen can replace separate moisturizer and sunscreen steps.

Use sun protection throughout the year, not just when the weather feels sunny. Reapply sunscreen every two hours and after swimming or sweating. Shade and protective clothing also matter. For a lightweight product example, CeraVe Ultra Light Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 combines moisturizer with UVA and UVB protection and has a matte finish. Choose sunscreen by protection and a texture you will use consistently, not by whether your cheeks or nose look shiny that morning.157

Before bed

  1. 1Remove makeup and cleanse gently. Use the same gentle cleanser as in the morning if it suits your skin.
  2. 2Apply any optional treatment after cleansing, following that product's directions.
  3. 3Finish with moisturizer, using a richer texture on dry patches if necessary. CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion is one example of a lightweight, oil free lotion containing ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide.

Toners, serums and eye creams are optional, so the bathroom shelf does not need a full supporting cast. Keep cleansing to twice a day and after sweating. If you introduce an optional treatment, add only one new product at a time. Begin slowly, such as a few times a week, and increase frequency as tolerated and permitted by its directions. Adding products separately makes a reaction easier to trace.15

Should you moisturize the oily parts too?

Moisturizing does not require an identical layer everywhere. General skincare advice includes moisturizer even for oily skin, but very oily areas can need less moisturizer or none while dry patches need more. A gel usually feels lighter than a lotion; a cream is thicker and more hydrating. Start with a lightweight texture where skin needs it, then use a richer cream on dry areas rather than automatically spreading it across your nose. Ceramides help support the protective skin barrier, the outer layer that helps retain moisture. Hyaluronic acid helps retain moisture, and niacinamide helps calm skin.147

Which treatments are worth adding?

For blackheads or clogged pores in oily areas, salicylic acid is an option. It is a beta hydroxy acid, a type of exfoliating ingredient that helps remove dead skin cells and smooth skin. A salicylic acid cleanser is one way to include it, but a treatment for an oily nose does not have to go on dry cheeks. For dryness, prioritize moisturizer; a hydrating serum is an optional addition. Avoid exfoliating dry, peeling patches, especially in winter, because exfoliation can strip away more moisture. Combination skin alone does not call for the strongest acne formula. If your skin is sensitive, avoid harsh ingredients, including salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, which can cause irritation.2467

Do you need to double cleanse?

Double cleansing is not essential for most people, despite giving face washing a sequel. One thorough wash with a gentle cleanser is usually enough. An oil based cleanser followed by a water based cleanser can help remove waterproof makeup or sunscreen. If you use that method, massage the first cleanser gently, rinse with lukewarm water, apply the second cleanser to damp skin, then rinse and pat dry. Micellar water before a water based cleanser is another makeup removal option. Avoid harsh or excessively drying cleansers. Oil based cleansers can cause breakouts in acne prone skin, particularly when used alone, and overwashing can cause dryness, irritation and damage to the skin barrier.3

When should you change the routine?

Keep the cleanser, moisturizer and daytime sunscreen foundation consistent, but adjust textures when your skin changes. Cold, dry weather can call for a creamy cleanser and thicker moisturizer; summer can favor a gel cleanser and lighter moisturizer. Hormonal changes, including pregnancy and breastfeeding, and some medications can also change your skin type. Use your current oiliness and dryness to guide product choices rather than treating an old skin type label as permanent.25

Stop using a new product if it causes burning, stinging, itching or redness. Switch to gentle, fragrance free cleansing and moisturizing rather than adding exfoliation to irritated skin. See a dermatologist if dryness does not improve, or becomes painful, cracked, bleeding or very irritating. A dermatologist can also help with persistent acne, uncertainty about your skin type, or choosing products when sensitivity limits your options.24
