Glycolic acid loosens the connections between dead surface skin cells, helping them shed. Moisturizer helps prevent water from escaping through the skin's outer barrier. Following exfoliation with moisturizer is general skincare guidance; the exact application sequence still depends on whether your acid is a cleanser, a product left on the skin, or a peel.12
How to apply glycolic acid and moisturizer
- 1Cleanse gently. Avoid a facial scrub, which can add irritation.
- 2Apply your glycolic acid product at night, following its label directions and warnings. Follow any instructions about rinsing or application time before moving to moisturizer.
- 3Apply your moisturizer over your face and neck, gently spreading it until absorbed.
- 4The next morning, apply broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours during the day.
Let the product directions determine any waiting or rinsing step rather than adding an arbitrary timer. For ordinary moisturizing after washing, applying moisturizer while skin is still damp helps trap water; follow the acid's application instructions when an exfoliant sits between cleansing and moisturizing.34
Which moisturizer should I choose?
Choose a gentle, fragrance free moisturizer, especially if your skin feels dry or sensitive. "Unscented" is not the same: those products can contain chemicals that hide other ingredients' odors. For dry skin, a cream or ointment adds more moisture than a lotion. Useful moisturizing ingredients include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone and petrolatum.5
If you have acne, look for "noncomedogenic," "oil free" or "won't clog pores" on the container. These descriptions mean a moisturizer is unlikely to cause acne. Moisturizer can also help skin tolerate drying acne treatments, including benzoyl peroxide and prescription retinoids. The useful label is the one that helps you choose, not the one that gives the bottle a promotion.4
How often should I use them?
Test glycolic acid on a small area first. Start once or twice weekly and increase only if your skin tolerates it. Moisturize daily when skin feels dry, including days without glycolic acid. Very dry skin can need moisturizer several times daily.245
Strength is not just the percentage on the bottle: exfoliation also depends on acidity and the rest of the formula. Consumer safety criteria for glycolic acid include a concentration of 10 percent or less, a final pH of at least 3.5, and protection against increased sun sensitivity or directions for daily sun protection.3
Brighter skin or more even pigmentation can take several months of consistent glycolic acid use. When starting, avoid combining it with other exfoliating acids, retinol or vitamin C serums to reduce irritation and make reactions easier to trace.2
When should I be careful or stop?
Be cautious with glycolic acid if you have sensitive or dry skin, rosacea, eczema, an active infection or skin that is not healing. Low concentrations are generally considered safe during pregnancy, but check with your healthcare provider if pregnant or breastfeeding.2
Stop an irritating product rather than continuing through burning, stinging or a rash. Persistent skin inflammation needs medical assessment. Tell a dermatologist if moisturizer itself burns or stings, or if dryness continues despite gentle care.56
After a professional peel, laser treatment or microneedling, follow your clinician's aftercare instead of this ordinary layering routine. Avoid glycolic acid on treatment day and during early healing; moisturizing ingredients such as ceramides and hyaluronic acid are appropriate across these procedure stages.7
Continue sunscreen, protective clothing and limited sun exposure throughout glycolic acid use and for one week after stopping. Nighttime application does not remove the increased sun sensitivity.23
