The routine below is general guidance for salicylic acid and vitamin C, not application instructions for a particular Paula's Choice formula.2

What does each product do?

BHA means beta hydroxy acid. Salicylic acid is the common skincare BHA: it dissolves into oil, helps remove dead skin and works inside pores to loosen the buildup that causes blackheads and whiteheads. It makes most sense when clogged pores are your main concern.2

Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which means it fights unstable molecules called free radicals that can damage skin. It supports collagen production and may improve wrinkles and dark spots. The two ingredients serve different purposes; choosing both should depend on what you want to address, rather than treating them as a compulsory pair.12

How should I introduce them?

  1. 1Test a new product on a small area first. Apply your normal amount to a spot under your arm or at your elbow twice daily for seven to 10 days, leaving it on for its normal application time.
  2. 2In the morning, use a gentle cleanser, then a few drops of vitamin C serum on your face and neck. Begin every other day and increase to daily use if tolerated.
  3. 3Follow with moisturizer and broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. Vitamin C does not replace sunscreen.
  4. 4At a separate time, such as your evening routine, use your BHA exactly as its label directs. Do not increase the amount or frequency to compensate for keeping the products apart.

Twice daily salicylic acid use suits many people, but that is not a target you need to reach when adding vitamin C. Too much exfoliation can irritate skin and remove structures that retain water and healthy fats. Let your product's directions and your skin's tolerance determine frequency.2

Who should be careful?

Do not apply salicylic acid to irritated, infected or reddened skin, and keep it away from eyes and the inside of your nose or mouth. If you already use a topical retinoid, benzoyl peroxide or another medicated skin treatment, ask your prescriber before adding BHA to the same area. Avoid adding abrasive cleansers or extra exfoliating products.3

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss salicylic acid use with your doctor first. For sensitive skin or a known ingredient allergy, check the full ingredient lists and test new products before facial use.13

When should I stop?

Mild tingling can occur with vitamin C. Substantial discomfort or irritation means stop using it and contact your doctor. If a product causes red, itchy or swollen skin, gently wash it off and do not use it again. Get medical help for a severe reaction that does not settle with a cool compress or petroleum jelly.14

How long should I give the routine?

Vitamin C can take up to three months of consistent use to produce a noticeable improvement. If acne is not improving with self treatment, or spots are deep, painful or leaving scars, see a doctor instead of adding more exfoliation.125
