Why choose one instead of both?

Retinal is also called retinaldehyde. Like retinol, it is a retinoid commonly used in cosmetics. Retinoids can cause dryness, peeling and irritation, which makes introducing two separate products an unnecessarily complicated starting point. Do not assume a second retinoid will give you faster or better results.13

Start with one treatment and keep the supporting routine gentle: cleanser, moisturizer and daytime sunscreen. A longer product list is not a better routine, even if it looks more impressive on the bathroom shelf. If you already use a retinol serum, check whether your moisturizer also contains retinol before adding anything else.2

How should I use the retinoid I choose?

  1. 1Test a new product first. Apply a small amount to your inner forearm twice daily for four to five days. If there is redness, itching or another reaction, do not move on to applying it to your face.
  2. 2At night, wash with a gentle cleanser and pat your skin dry. Avoid scrubbing.
  3. 3Apply your chosen product as directed. General retinol guidance is a thin, pea sized amount over the face, avoiding the mouth, nose and eyes. Follow your retinal product's directions rather than assuming the same amount applies.
  4. 4Finish with moisturizer. For retinol that causes irritation, applying a thin layer of moisturizer first is another option.
  5. 5Begin every third night, then increase gradually only as your skin tolerates it. Use sunscreen of at least SPF 30 during the day, along with shade and protective clothing.

Can I alternate retinol and retinal nights?

If you choose to alternate, use only one on each treatment night and count both toward your total retinoid frequency. Alternating names does not create a rest night. Starting with retinol one night and retinal the next still means using a retinoid on consecutive nights, rather than following a slow introduction.16

For a beginner, sticking with one product makes the routine simpler and avoids introducing several treatments together. Choose products that do different jobs, rather than giving your evening routine two applicants for the same vacancy. If you are switching products, treat the new one as a new introduction instead of assuming tolerance transfers automatically.23

How long should I wait for results?

With regular retinol use, improvements can become noticeable around three months. Wrinkle improvements from retinoids generally take three to six months, with the best results taking six to twelve months. Continued use is needed to maintain the benefits. These are general expectations, not a timetable for a particular retinal formula or for alternating products.27

When should I stop or get advice?

Stop a cosmetic product that stings, burns or tingles. Watch for redness, significant peeling and irritation rather than treating them as a reason to add another active. If a prescribed product causes these symptoms, ask your dermatologist before stopping it or adding another retinoid.35

Do not use retinoids during pregnancy. Existing dryness, skin allergies or substantial redness make retinoids a poor starting choice; eczema can also worsen because of their drying effect. Irritation can trigger dark marks in darker skin. Ask a dermatologist about alternatives if your skin is already inflamed, and seek advice before self treating acne with significant scarring.16
