Is retinal stronger than retinol?
Yes, in terms of biological activity. Retinol takes two conversion steps to become retinoic acid: first to retinal, then to retinoic acid. Retinal, also called retinaldehyde, takes one. That makes retinal the more active ingredient, but does not give you a reliable timetable for faster results. Neither cosmetic ingredient has enough strong clinical evidence to declare every retinal product better than every retinol product. Delivery into the skin and ingredient stability also matter. The ingredient name alone cannot pick the best formula, however much work one changed letter is being asked to do.1
| Difference | Retinol | Retinal |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion to retinoic acid | Two steps | One step |
| Relative biological activity | Lower | Higher |
| Other name | Vitamin A | Retinaldehyde |
| Typical use | Cosmetic skincare | Cosmetic skincare |
| Tolerance | Can irritate; tolerance depends on the formula | Can irritate; not automatically harsher than retinol |
Which should you choose?
If you are starting out, choose a low strength, less intense formula rather than chasing maximum activity. Retinol is an established option for uneven tone, pigmentation and texture. Retinal is an option if you want the more active cosmetic retinoid, but switching is not necessary just because it sits higher on the activity ladder. For substantial redness, dryness or sensitivity, neither is an automatic first choice.14
How do you start using it?
- 1Follow the product's directions. For retinol, first try a little on a small patch of skin and wait a couple of days to check for redness or itching.
- 2Use your retinoid at night. Cleanse gently and pat your skin dry without scrubbing.
- 3Apply as directed, keeping the product away from your eyes and lips. General retinol guidance is a thin layer, about a pea sized amount for the face; follow your retinal product's own amount.
- 4Start every other night and increase gradually as tolerated. Finish with moisturizer. For retinol that causes irritation, a thin layer of moisturizer before application can help.
- 5Use sunscreen of at least SPF 30 every day, alongside shade and protective clothing.
Use one retinoid product rather than several, because a routine does not need understudies for the same role. If you already use a retinol serum, choose a moisturizer without another dose of retinol. These are general routine principles, not identical directions for every retinal and retinol formula.5
How long until you see results?
Retinol takes several weeks to produce visible changes, and improvements in wrinkles usually take several months. About three months of regular use is a reasonable checkpoint for an ordinary retinol routine. There is no settled retinal timetable that lets you promise the same changes sooner simply because retinal needs one fewer conversion step.35
Who should be careful?
Do not use retinoids during pregnancy. Retinoids can worsen eczema and cause dryness, redness, peeling, itching or burning. Stop using a product that causes significant irritation and seek medical advice rather than pushing through. Irritation can trigger dark marks in darker skin, so starting slowly and moisturizing matter especially here. Ask a dermatologist before starting if you have substantial inflammation, skin allergies, moderate or severe acne scarring, or acne linked to hormonal changes.234
