What does each product do?
Retinol is a form of vitamin A that helps unclog pores and increases collagen production. COSRX describes the snail filtrate in its 96 Mucin Power Essence as replenishing moisture and soothing sensitized skin. Their jobs differ: retinol is the active treatment, while mucin is a hydrating step. You do not need to put them on separate nights just because they are retinol and snail mucin.123
How should I layer them?
- 1Patch test the retinol on a small area first. Wait a couple of days and check for redness or itching before using it on your face.
- 2Cleanse gently and pat your skin dry. Apply the snail mucin essence evenly after cleansing.
- 3Let your skin dry, then apply retinol in a thin layer. General face directions use an amount about the size of a pea and advise avoiding the eyes, nose and mouth; follow your product's directions if they differ.
- 4Finish with a moisturizer.
- 5Use sun protection the next day. Retinoids can make skin more sensitive to sun, so use sunscreen and seek shade or cover skin with sun protective clothing.
An essence can go before retinol. If your snail product is a cream, use it after retinol as the moisturizing step. COSRX's snail kit places its 96 essence before its 92 cream, and COSRX's retinol oil directions say to follow with moisturizer. COSRX's snail kit gives the essence and cream separate places in the routine, a small triumph for instructions with a sense of sequence.12
How often should I use retinol?
Start retinol every other night or less often, then increase gradually only if your skin is comfortable. Snail mucin can stay in the morning routine while you introduce retinol at night, or you can use both in the same evening once you know your skin tolerates retinol.134
For COSRX The Retinol 0.5 Oil specifically, COSRX advises starting two to three times a week and gradually increasing after building tolerance. The product is described for people already acclimated to retinol, so that schedule is not a starting point for every retinol formula.1
How long does retinol take to work?
Retinol starts working in skin cells right away, but visible changes take several weeks. Fine lines and wrinkles can take several months to improve. Your skin may look worse at first as it adjusts, so do not judge the routine after a few uses.3
Who should be careful?
- If your skin is dry or you have skin allergies, retinoids may not be a good fit. Avoid retinoids and ask a dermatologist if your skin is already very red or inflamed.
- If irritation can leave dark marks on your skin, start slowly and watch closely. Irritation can trigger dark marks, especially in darker skin.
- Do not use retinol during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, tell your obstetrician and dermatologist about your skin care and medicines.
- If you use prescription tretinoin or another prescription retinoid, follow your prescriber's instructions and ask before changing your routine.
Dryness, redness, itching, burning and peeling can happen with retinol, and skin can look worse at first. Stop using the retinoid and ask a dermatologist if you develop marked redness or inflammation rather than trying to push through it.34
What if I use COSRX The Retinol 0.5 Oil?
COSRX advises against using its 0.5 oil in the same routine as exfoliating acids or high concentration vitamin C. That instruction is for this specific oil; it does not mean you need to keep snail mucin on a separate night.1
