What does each product do?

Vitamin C helps address dark spots and signs of skin aging. It acts as an antioxidant, helping protect skin against damaging molecules called free radicals, and supports collagen, the protein that gives skin structure. Your moisturizer handles hydration. Ceramides are among the ingredients used in moisturizers, so a ceramide cream can fill the moisturizer step rather than becoming an extra step.12

Keep the routine to cleanser, vitamin C, moisturizer and sunscreen, rather than giving your bathroom shelf a management problem. You do not need to add more products just because you are pairing these two.13

How should I layer them?

  1. 1Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and gently pat dry. Avoid rough scrubbing.
  2. 2Apply your vitamin C serum. If you already use a toner, apply the serum after the toner.
  3. 3Apply your ceramide moisturizer over the serum.
  4. 4Finish with broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it 15 minutes before going outdoors, after your other skincare and before makeup.

Vitamin C can be used daily. Morning application makes practical sense because vitamin C works alongside sunscreen to improve protection against sun damage; vitamin C does not replace the sunscreen step. Vitamin C can also be used overnight. Your moisturizer can stay in both your morning and evening routines.14

Which serum and moisturizer should I choose?

For an ascorbic acid serum, look for a concentration of 10% to 20%; concentrations above 20% raise the risk of irritation. Sensitive skin calls for a lower concentration. Choose protective, dark or opaque packaging because vitamin C is sensitive to light. Stability and absorption matter too: a product containing vitamin C is not automatically an effective vitamin C formula.45

Choose your moisturizer for your skin's needs and check whether it contains additional active ingredients. Some moisturizers also contain vitamin C, retinol or exfoliating acids. Choose products that complement each other, rather than hiring several bottles for the same job. If your serum already supplies vitamin C, you do not need to seek out another vitamin C product for the moisturizer step.1

How long until I see a difference?

Expect about three months of consistent vitamin C use to see its effects. A bare faced photo once a month can help you compare progress. Moisturizers can temporarily make skin look fuller and soften the appearance of fine lines, but that is a different effect from vitamin C's longer term benefits. Keep the routine consistent unless a product irritates your skin; repeatedly switching products makes progress harder to judge.124

What if my skin is sensitive or I use prescription skincare?

Vitamin C can cause dryness, itching or redness. Stop using a product that irritates your skin instead of adding more products to compensate. Using several active products can itself cause irritation. If you already use prescription acne treatment, moisturizers can help with treatment related dryness and irritation, and ceramide moisturizers can be a supportive addition. That benefit is separate from deciding whether to add vitamin C to your prescribed routine. Ask your dermatologist about fitting the serum around your treatment, or if irritation persists. See a dermatologist for a skin condition that affects your quality of life.2346
