Does the strength change the answer?

Both washes contain benzoyl peroxide, an acne medicine that reduces bacteria on the skin. General benzoyl peroxide guidance is to start with the lowest strength to check how well your skin tolerates it. Between these two PanOxyl washes, that means starting with 4%. The product names are Acne Creamy Wash and Acne Foaming Wash, so at least this corner of the skincare aisle has resisted calling a cleanser an elixir.3

How to use PanOxyl daily

Before your first regular use, apply a small amount to one or two small areas you want to treat for three days. If there is no reaction or discomfort, use the wash as directed.4

  1. 1Wash your hands and wet the area you want to cleanse.
  2. 2Apply the wash and gently massage for one to two minutes. Keep it away from your eyes, lips and mouth.
  3. 3Rinse thoroughly with water, pat dry and wash your hands again.
  4. 4Apply sunscreen after using PanOxyl if you are going outside.

The wash directions do not require morning or evening use. Start with one daily application; do not jump straight to several washes. PanOxyl's 10% product page allows a gradual increase to twice daily if needed, while both package labels allow two or three applications daily if needed or directed by a doctor. Follow the directions on your own tube. Using more benzoyl peroxide than directed does not make it work faster and increases the risk of side effects.1235

When should you use it less often?

Dryness, redness, itching and peeling can occur. Reduce frequency if dryness or peeling bothers you; a lower concentration can also reduce irritation. Stop using PanOxyl and ask a doctor if irritation becomes severe. Do not use either wash if you have very sensitive skin or are sensitive to benzoyl peroxide. Avoid applying benzoyl peroxide to infected skin, cuts or grazes.123

Other acne medicines applied to the skin can increase dryness and irritation. If you already use prescription acne treatment, ask your prescriber or pharmacist before adding PanOxyl. Benzoyl peroxide can be part of a planned combination treatment, including alongside a topical antibiotic, but that is different from adding another treatment yourself. Avoid abrasive cleansers and products that dry or irritate the skin. Choose moisturizers and sunscreens that are not oil based or pore clogging.2467

How long should you give it?

The packaging offers "Daily Control" and "Maximum Strength", not a medal for finishing the stronger tube.12

General benzoyl peroxide guidance puts the first effects at about four to six weeks; acne treatment plans often take six to eight weeks before fewer breakouts appear. These are treatment timelines, not a promise for either PanOxyl wash. Contact a doctor if there is no improvement after four to six weeks, and seek advice sooner if acne worsens. Acne that is causing scarring also warrants medical assessment.467

Who should check before using it?

Ask a health professional before using PanOxyl during pregnancy or breastfeeding. For children under 12, speak to a doctor before using benzoyl peroxide. Keep the wash away from hair and dyed fabrics because it can bleach them. Stop use and get emergency medical help for throat tightness, difficulty breathing, faintness, or swelling of the face, lips or tongue.124
