Does your bottle allow eye area use?
Look for directions specifically allowing use around the eyes. If the label only describes facial use, ask the manufacturer before applying the oil under your eyes. Pure rosehip oil can be applied directly to skin, but that general permission is not permission to use every formula near the eyes. For example, Guangzhou Yilong Cosmetics' Rosehip Oil label says to keep the product out of eyes and not use it on damaged or broken skin.234
How to apply it under your eyes
- 1Confirm that the product is intended for the eye area, and read its application directions.
- 2Try a small amount on your forearm before using it on your face to check for irritation.
- 3Wash your hands before application. If you use an applicator, make sure it is clean.
- 4Apply the product as directed to the skin under your eyes, keeping the oil out of your eyes. Do not apply it while the surrounding skin is inflamed or you have an eye infection.
- 5Stop immediately if irritation develops. See a doctor if the irritation persists.
For general skin use, rosehip oil can be used once or twice daily. For under eye use, follow the specific product's frequency and routine instructions rather than treating that general schedule as an eye area dose.23
What is rosehip oil good for?
Rosehip oil helps moisturize skin and can improve the appearance of fine lines. Rosehip oil is a moisturizer, not a time machine. Face oils can reduce water loss by forming a barrier, making skin look smoother or plumper. These are general skin benefits, not a reason to expect rosehip oil to erase dark circles or under eye bags. There is no established under eye results timetable to plan around.35
How do you use rosehip oil on your face?
For the rest of your face, pure rosehip oil can go directly on skin after a small area test. Follow the directions for a blended product. A dark bottle protects rosehip oil from UV rays, so the packaging has a job beyond looking decorative. Raw or unrefined oil has a strong color that can mark skin and clothes.23
Is rosehip oil good for your face?
Rosehip oil is an option for dry skin, but face oils are not a good default for everyone. If you have oily or acne prone skin, consider skipping facial oils. Some formulas are noncomedogenic, meaning they are designed not to clog pores. If you have rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis, a condition that causes itchy, flaky patches, talk to a dermatologist before adding a facial oil.35
If you have sensitive skin or known allergies, read the full ingredient panel and avoid your known triggers. Fragrances and preservatives are among common cosmetic allergens. In the US, terms such as "hypoallergenic" and "for sensitive skin" have no federal standard or definition. An itchy, red rash can be an allergic reaction; stop using the product and discuss a suspected reaction with a healthcare professional.2
