What should you expect from it?
Do not rely on vanilla essential oil to treat a skin problem. Choose a facial product for its intended skincare use rather than assuming its scent provides a treatment. Buying a vanilla scent is not the same as choosing a treatment for a skin problem, even if the bottle looks ready to run a wellness retreat. "Natural" and "organic" do not mean an ingredient is safe on skin: plant ingredients can be irritating or cause allergic reactions. In the US, cosmetics do not need FDA approval before sale, so a place on the shelf is not a graduation certificate.4
Check the intended use and ingredient list
A fragrance product intended for the body is different from a room fragrance. Check the actual intended use rather than treating every scented bottle as skincare. Under US cosmetic labeling rules, a fragrance mixture can appear simply as "Fragrance" instead of listing each component. If you have fragrance sensitivities and the label leaves you unsure, ask the manufacturer about the ingredients. "Unscented" is not the same as having no fragrance ingredients: a product can contain fragrance to mask the smell of other ingredients without having a noticeable scent.3
Who should be especially careful?
If you have a known fragrance allergy, avoid fragranced products, including essential oils. Fragrance allergy is usually lifelong and can worsen with continued exposure. Fragrance reactions often affect the face and eyelids. People with atopic dermatitis, a form of eczema, also have a higher risk of contact dermatitis because their skin provides less protection against irritants and allergens. Switching to another essential oil is not a reliable solution: people allergic to essential oils often react to several oils.156
How to test a finished facial product
These steps are for a finished skincare product, not undiluted essential oil. If you suspect a fragrance allergy, talk with your doctor before testing a fragranced product yourself.15
- 1Choose a spot about the size of a quarter on the underside of your arm or the bend of your elbow, where the product will not be rubbed or washed away.
- 2Apply the normal amount and thickness twice daily for seven to 10 days.
- 3Leave the product on for its usual duration. For a cleanser, use five minutes or the duration stated in its instructions.
- 4If no redness, itching or swelling develops, begin using the product as directed. This home test helps predict a reaction; it is different from medical patch testing.
What if your face reacts?
Allergic contact dermatitis is an allergic skin rash that can cause itching, redness and scaling. Essential oil allergy generally appears 24 to 72 hours after exposure, so an immediate lack of stinging does not rule it out. If a reaction develops, gently wash the product off and stop using it. A cool compress or petroleum jelly can help relieve the skin. See a dermatologist if the reaction is severe and these measures do not help, or if a rash persists. Medical patch testing can help identify the cause.126
