Scar gel sheets, silicone tape used to secure dressings, and purpose made wrinkle tape have different uses. Silicone scar sheets are designed for healed skin with raised scars, including hypertrophic scars and keloids. Silicone can reduce a raised scar's size, hardness and redness. Scar tape is designed for raised scars, so moving it to the forehead does not give it a new job description.13

Can you use silicone scar sheets for wrinkles?

The answer is the same for sheets: they are a scar care product, not a proven wrinkle treatment. Silicone sheeting is used after skin surgery to reduce the risk of raised scars in people prone to them. Even for scar reduction, the strength of the evidence is limited. There is no established wrinkle treatment schedule or reliable time to results for repurposed scar sheets.14

With face taping, soft skin can temporarily take on a smoother shape, but the wrinkles return after removal. That makes tape a temporary cosmetic tool, not a wrinkle treatment with an ambitious stationery department. Wearing scar sheets daily for months is a scar treatment approach; it is not a reason to follow the same schedule for facial lines.35

How do you use wrinkle tape?

If you still want to try taping for temporary smoothing, use a product specifically designed for face taping rather than household tape. Follow its own directions instead of borrowing a scar sheet's wear time.2

  1. 1Check the intended use and application instructions before putting the tape on your face.
  2. 2Prepare the skin as the product directs. Silicone adheres to dry skin; Siladerm scar sheeting requires washing and drying the treatment area.
  3. 3Apply and remove the tape as its manufacturer directs. Use only the specified wear time, including whether overnight use is intended.
  4. 4After removal, check the covered skin for irritation or damage before considering another application.

Do not assume tape belongs on top of your usual skincare. Siladerm specifically prohibits creams, lotions, sunscreen and other silicone products underneath its fabric gel sheeting. Its directions also require removing and washing the sheet and skin every 12 hours, then drying both before reapplication. Those are instructions for that scar product, not a facial wrinkle routine. Tape can also fail to adhere over moisturizers or topical steroid creams.46

What should make you stop?

Face tape can irritate skin, trigger an allergic reaction, remove part of the outer skin layer or cause blisters. Soft silicone dressings are designed to reduce skin trauma during removal, but scar sheets can still cause a rash or skin breakdown. Avoid scar sheeting on open wounds or skin disrupted by a rash. If irritation, blistering or skin damage develops, stop using the tape. Contact a doctor if a rash persists; Siladerm directs users to discontinue its sheeting in that situation.12356

What can treat wrinkles instead?

Options include retinol creams, injections that temporarily weaken wrinkle causing muscles, fillers that add volume, and laser resurfacing that promotes collagen growth. A dermatologist can help choose an approach suited to the lines you want to treat.2

Professional microneedling also treats wrinkles by using tiny needles to stimulate collagen, a structural protein in skin. Improvement can begin within weeks, with full results usually taking several months. It requires a suitability check: people who heal poorly, have a history of keloids or have a weakened immune system should avoid it. Home microneedling carries risks of infection and scarring, so it is not a safer substitute for tape.7
