Which zinc oxide product should you use?

Choose a product intended for lips; the practical advice here is for lip balm and lip sunscreen, not every cream that contains zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is a mineral sunscreen ingredient, and mineral sunscreens are recommended for sensitive skin. Look for it in the sunscreen's "Active Ingredients" section. A lip balm or lipstick with SPF can protect your lips, so lipstick is allowed to have a job beyond choosing a colour.23

Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB, the two types of harmful ultraviolet rays. SPF describes protection against sunburn, not how long you can leave the product on before reapplying. Look for water resistance too. The word "sport" has no FDA definition on sunscreen, so the packaging can have athletic ambitions without earning a protection rating.23

How do you apply zinc oxide lip sunscreen?

  1. 1Apply your lip sunscreen before going outdoors, following the package directions. General sunscreen guidance gives a lead time of 15 to 30 minutes.
  2. 2Reapply about every two hours outdoors, including on cloudy days and during winter.
  3. 3Reapply lip balm after eating and drinking. Apply it again after swimming, sweating or toweling off, following its water resistance directions.
  4. 4Use shade and a wide brimmed hat alongside sunscreen. Sunscreen is not a reason to spend longer in the sun.

Water resistance lasts for a stated period, usually 40 or 80 minutes in water. Check the label for the interval that applies to your product. No sunscreen is waterproof, and a water resistance claim does not remove the need to reapply every two hours while outdoors.2

What if your lips are already chapped?

Zinc oxide is a sun protective ingredient in lip balm, but dry lips also need moisturizing care. Choose a fragrance free balm or lip ointment with moisturizing ingredients such as petroleum jelly, glycerin, ceramides or dimethicone. Use it as needed during the day and an ointment at bedtime. Regular balm use should ease discomfort while lips heal; complete recovery from chapping averages two to three weeks, with severe chapping taking longer.5

Avoid licking, picking or biting your lips. Licking briefly relieves dryness, but saliva damages the protective barrier and keeps the dryness going. Keep topical acne treatments such as retinoids, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide off your lips because they can irritate this delicate skin. For chapped lips, avoid balms containing fragrance, flavoring, menthol, eucalyptus or camphor.56

Can zinc oxide help prevent cold sores?

Sun exposure can trigger cold sores. Applying sunblock or a lip balm containing zinc oxide before going outside is one preventive step. Treat an active outbreak as a separate problem: prescription antiviral medicines can reduce pain and shorten symptoms, and work best when started at warning signs before blisters appear.1

When should you stop or get medical advice?

Stop using a lip product if it causes stinging, burning or tingling. See a healthcare professional if chapping worsens, fails to improve after a few weeks, or bleeding keeps returning despite home care. For cold sores, seek care for severe symptoms, sores lasting more than two weeks, blisters near the eyes, or symptoms with a weakened immune system. For babies younger than six months, ask a pediatrician before using sunscreen and prioritize shade and protective clothing.145
