The schedule depends on whether the product is a skin protectant or a sunscreen. Read the product's intended use before choosing a routine, because 'zinc oxide' is not much of a calendar.13
How do you apply zinc oxide for diaper rash?
- 1Wash your hands before changing the diaper. Change wet or soiled diapers promptly.
- 2Gently clean the diaper area with water and a soft cloth or cotton wool. Do not rub or scrub. Avoid wipes containing alcohol or perfume.
- 3Pat the skin dry or let it air dry completely before applying zinc oxide.
- 4Follow the ointment's label for the amount. Dabur's 20% ointment directs liberal application with every diaper change, especially at bedtime or before prolonged contact with a wet diaper.
- 5Put the diaper on loosely and wash your hands again. Give your baby time without a diaper when possible.
Zinc oxide barrier products help keep moisture away from clean, dry skin. Frequent diaper changes still matter: cream does not replace removing a wet or dirty diaper. Avoid excessive washing, soaps and bubble bath, which can irritate the area. Mild to moderate diaper rash usually starts healing within 3 to 4 days with appropriate care.45
Contact your child's clinician if the rash worsens or does not go away within 2 to 3 days. Seek advice sooner for fever, blisters, pus filled sores, a rash spreading beyond the diaper area, or any diaper rash in the first six weeks after birth. A yeast infection needs different treatment; ask the clinician before adding an antifungal or steroid cream.4
How often should you apply zinc oxide sunscreen?
Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and water resistance. Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB, the two types of harmful ultraviolet rays. Those label details matter more than the brand name, which does not deserve a reference check.236
- 1Apply sunscreen about 15 minutes before going outdoors, including on cloudy days and in winter.
- 2Cover all skin not covered by clothing. Most adults need at least one ounce for exposed body skin; use at least one teaspoon for the face. Rub it in thoroughly.
- 3Remember the ears, neck, tops of the feet, hairline and exposed scalp. Use an SPF 30 lip balm for the lips.
- 4Reapply every two hours while outdoors and immediately after swimming or sweating. Reapply after toweling off, too.
Water resistant sunscreen is tested for either 40 or 80 minutes of swimming or sweating; check which interval your label gives and reapply at that limit. No sunscreen is waterproof. Even when your skin stays dry, water resistance does not extend the two hour reapplication interval. A higher SPF does not let you wait longer between applications.37
Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide are an option for sensitive skin because they can be less irritating. For babies under six months, keep them out of direct sun and use protective clothing; ask a doctor before applying sunscreen. For older children, follow the sunscreen's Drug Facts directions. Use shade and protective clothing alongside sunscreen.367
What about zinc oxide for poison ivy?
Dabur's 20% zinc oxide ointment helps dry oozing and weeping from poison ivy, oak and sumac. Its directions allow liberal application as often as needed, rather than a fixed daily count. Keep it out of the eyes and do not apply it over large body areas. Stop and ask a doctor if symptoms worsen, last more than seven days, or clear and return within a few days, or if you are allergic to an ingredient.1
